The Stone Villa was a two–story house, and the adults inside were oblivious to the fact that two little children were sitting at the corner of the staircase upstairs, listening to every word of their conversation.
Perched on the steps were a pair of cherubic twins dressed in matching denim outfits. Their features were strikingly similar, making it clear they were pigeon twins. The boy wore a serious expression, while the girl next to him, with rosy, chubby cheeks, rested her chin on her hands and smiled with eyes that curved like crescent moons.
Though they didn’t understand everything the adults were discussing, they could tell it wasn’t anything good.
These little ones were none other than Serena’s twins, Silas and Sylvie
“Silas…”
Shh… Silas pulled his sister close and quietly led her back into their room, closing the door behind them. His little face turned serious.
“Silas, are they planning to do something bad to Mommy?” Sylvie nervously clutched the hem of her dress, her tiny face filled with indignation. “They’re so mean. Did you hear what they were saying?”
Of course, he did. Their grandparents had always treated them poorly, and they weren’t any kinder to their mother. Silas furrowed his brow. Their grandfather, Chuck, assumed he and Sylvie were too young to understand anything, so he never bothered to hide his intentions. It was obvious they were using him and Sylvie to manipulate Serena into doing their bidding.
“Sylvie, do you want to leave this place?”
“Yes, yes! Do you have a plan, Silas? But will Grandpa agree?” Sylvie clung to his arm, her eyes sparkling with hope.
“Who cares if he agrees? As long as Mommy says yes, we can go.” Silas‘ voice was as cold as his expression.
“Great! I’ve wanted to move out for a long time. Let’s pack our things now so we can leave as soon as Mommy comes home!” Sylvie’s excitement bubbled over.
Don’t rush. If we’re leaving, we should leave them a parting gift.”
The twins exchanged a mischievous grin, looking like two little foxes with a secret plan.
Serena dashed out of the hotel and didn’t relax until she was certain no one was following her.
Standing on the busy street, she felt uneasy under the gaze of curious passersby. It couldn’t be helped–this body was just too eye–catching. Even in a simple T–shirt and jeans, she looked like a temptress, let alone now in such a revealing outfit.
She remembered seeing a large shopping mall nearby and headed inside to buy a scarf to wrap around her neck before hailing a cab home.
By the time she arrived, it was already past ten. As she stepped out of the car, she saw two little figures sitting on the steps in the garden. Bathed in the golden sunlight, they looked like a pair of pure, angelic beings. Serena’s gaze softened instantly.
Sylvie spotted her first and immediately ran over with her little legs, calling out, “Mommy!”
Serena bent down and scooped her daughter up, hugging her tightly. Silas, however, stopped about a few feet away.
Come here, Silas. Let Mommy give you a hug.”
Chapter 11
“I’m a man, and it’s my job to protect you, Mommy.” Silas resisted the urge to rush into her embrace, his small face turning serious as he tried to look tough. “A man shouldn’t need his mother to hold him.”
Serena crouched down and playfully tapped his nose, then pulled him into her arms as well. “You’re only four You can be a man later. For now, just be Mommy’s good little boy.”
“But you’re a girl, Mommy, and someone might try to bully you.” The little boy tried to push away, but he hesitated, his chubby face full of concern.
Serena laughed heartily. “If anyone dares to bully me, I’ll give them a good beating!” She spoke lightly, though, in her heart, she felt a pang of tenderness for the boy. The old Serena had often suffered at home, and Silas had seen enough to want to grow up quickly and protect her.
She gave each of the twins a kiss on the cheek, and when she saw the red flush creeping across Silas‘ cool little face, she couldn’t help but laugh. From now on, she would be the one to protect them. Now that she had full guardianship, she could face whatever came their way without worry.
The July heat was stifling. As Sylvie snuggled in Serena’s arms, she curiously pointed at the scarf around her mother’s neck. “Mommy, isn’t it too hot to wear a scarf? Let me take it off for you.”
Before Serena could react, Sylvie had already tugged the scarf away. With both arms occupied, she couldn’t stop her.
“Ah–Mommy, did a bug bite you on the neck? The mark is huge!” Sylvie exclaimed.
Serena’s eye twitched as she quickly set the twins down and wrapped the scarf back around her neck. Inwardly, she cursed Lennox yet again. Seeing the innocent curiosity in her children’s eyes, she awkwardly cleared her throat. “Yes, a mosquito bit me last night.”
