Lennox seemed quite pleased with her reaction. He lowered his head, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as he spoke into her ear. “You’d better stay still, or I might just kiss you right here in front of everyone
Serena’s hand flew to her mouth instinctively.
The thought of him kissing her in public made her stomach turn. If he did that, she might as well bury her face in shame forever.
She fumed inwardly.
what kind of p
does he think I am?
But before she could even process her thoughts, she felt his arm tighten around her waist. His hand was hot, practically burning through the thin fabric of her clothes. The heat radiating from his touch was overwhelming.
Uncomfortable with such proximity to a man, she tried to shift away.
But his grip only tightened further.
Lennox frowned down at her. “Don’t move!”
Overbearing jerk!
Despite her dissatisfaction, Serena found herself limping alongside Lennox as he guided her into the lobby. Everyone in the room was focused on their tasks, but their eyes darted toward the two of them.
She felt like a deer in headlights, exposed and uncomfortable.
In a sudden burst of desperation, she cleared her throat loudly.
Instantly, all the activity in the lobby stopped, and dozens of eyes turned in her direction.
“With so many eyes on her, it felt like standing under a spotlight.
She awkwardly halted and quickly offered an explanation, “Um… I twisted my ankle…”
The implication was clear. I twisted my ankle, so that’s why Lennox is helping me. We’re not involved in any way. so please don’t misunderstand!
However, some explanations only dug a deeper hole.
The crowd exchanged knowing glances, completely unfazed by her words. They all understood that Lennox was the epitome of cold–heartedness. He wouldn’t bat an eye if someone else twisted an ankle or even broke a leg.
Yet here was this girl, receiving special treatment, practically trying to distance herself from him, which made the younger women in the lobby feel like they were bleeding inside.
Only the secretary, Vanessa, struggled to contain her laughter.
How much does she disdain Mr. Savili?
She couldn’t help but sneak a glance at him. He wore his usual ice–cold expression, but somehow, he seemed even chillier than usual.
Vanessa approached Serena and patted her shoulder. “Miss Stone, you twisted your ankle, right? You should let Mr. Savill take you to get it checked out.”

Chapter 23
“I know,” Vanessa interrupted with a bright smile. “Mr. Savill values talent and always cares for his employees, so we won’t misunderstand your situation.”
Is that so?
Serena couldn’t shake the feeling that Zhang’s smile was just a tad too…. unusual.
Before she could say anything more, Lennox pulled her along, practically carrying her out of the lobby. Once they stepped outside, a wave of heat hit them.
He held her shoulders firmly. “I’ll go get the car. You wait here for a moment.”
“I can just take a cab home…” The intensity of his gaze made her words fade into silence
As Lennox went to the underground parking to get the car, Serena waited at the building entrance. With one injured foot making it hard to balance, she decided to just take off her heels entirely. Her foot still throbbed, and at this point, she couldn’t care less about appearances. She hobbled over to the side of the entrance and squatted down.
The hot pavement burned against her bare feet, making her wince, but after a minute, she adjusted to the heat. Leaning against the sunbaked wall, she tapped a seven–inch heel against the ground, angrily whacking at some loose gravel as if each pebble were Lennox himself.
“Just you wait,” she muttered. “One day, I’ll have you under my heel. Let’s see how high and mighty you are then!”
The sun was shifting further southward, and Serena sighed.
Back at home, Zoey and the kids were surely waiting for her to come home for lunch. She had no idea if Lennox would even let her leave anytime soon, and the thought made her increasingly frustrated.
Growing more annoyed, she braced herself against the wall and stood up. Seeing no sign of Lennox’s car, she smacked her forehead.
What am I thinking?
Do I really have to stay just because he told me to?
This is my perfect chance to slip away.
Propping herself up, she started toward the street. In a city as connected as Alderspring, cabs were everywhere. All she had to do was flag one down, and she’d be on her way home.
Limping her way toward the street, she soon spotted an empty cab in the distance and waved.
“Hey, cab! Over here!” she called.
The cab pulled smoothly to the curb.
Serena balanced on her right leg, hopping toward the street. But before she could reach the cab, a sleek black sports car tore toward her, the speed sending her pulse racing.
Her face paled as the car zoomed closer.
Why is that car coming straight at me?
It can’t really be trying to hit me, can it?
Instinct told her to move, but her body was frozen in fear. The black car was nearly upon her.
“Ah!”
Chapter 23
She shut her eyes, bracing for the impact.
Instead of pain, she heard the tires screech as the car skidded to a halt, the wind whipping her hair up in a rush. Slowly, she opened her eyes to see the car’s wheels stopped just inches from her toes.
Cold sweat prickled down her spine.
So close!
This is way too close!
Before she could fully recover, the driver’s door swung open. Lennox stepped out, stalking around the front of the car and stopping right in front of her, his face colder than ever.

It might have been the low air conditioning or just his chilling tone, but she shivered involuntary
The man behind the wheel looked colder than an iceberg, his expression stony, as if one more word from her would result in an icy glare capable of freezing her on the spot.
Honestly, she was a little scared of him.
She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, making sure to keep a safe distance from him. She guber song the courage to ask where exactly he planned to take her.
After all, what’s the worst he could do? He wouldn’t actually sell me off or anything righ
Lennox’s cold gaze remained fixed ahead as he drove in silence.
Serena, knowing she was better off not poking the bear, decided to stay quiet too.
Partway through, Lennox pulled over, stepped out, and quickly returned with a small purchase. He tossed onto the seat between them before driving off again. Curiosity got the better of her, and she leaned over to see what he’d bought.
Lennox caught her looking and let out a scoff, though his face had softened slightly
As the car moved forward again, she grew bolder and reached for the plastic bag. Inside, she found a for bruises and sprains. She paused, biting her lip lightly, and tilted her head to look at him.
“You… you bought this for me?”
He cast her a sidelong glance. “What do you think?” –
She gave a sheepish laugh.
Inwardly, though, she couldn’t help but think that men were even more unpredictable than she’d imagined
A moment ago, he was practically scaring me half to death with that death–grip driving, and now he’s buying me medicine? They always say a woman’s heart is as hard to read as a needle at the bottom of the ocean, but honestly, I’m starting to think a man’s heart might be even harder to figure out
