Thank goodness for seatbelts.
Oh, and his bloodshot eyes and hand
reaching for me.
06
He pulled the car over in the middle of the
street.
I could hear the other drivers yelling.
David gripped the steering wheel, staring at
me in disbelief.
If his eyes could shoot fire, I’d be toast.
“Divorce? Who wants a divorce?”
“Me.”
His eyes widened, then he laughed.
I cleared my throat, reminding him to pull
over.
L
While he moved the car, I pulled out the
divorce papers I had printed.
I was nervous.
“I talked to a lawyer. I could get half of your
wealth.”
It was what I deserved, but I still felt unsure.
“We didn’t have a wedding, just a marriage
license. Divorce won’t be complicated. Take a
look. If everything’s okay, just sign.”
I added, “You’ll be free, and you can be with
whoever you want.”
I was saying it to myself too.
He took the divorce papers, glanced through
them, and held them in his hand.
“You lost the ring on purpose, didn’t you?”
He squinted at me, his voice cold. “When did
you start planning this?”
I was surprised he asked and chuckled.
“I didn’t lose the ring on purpose. I took it off
and put it in my pocket.”
“When I went to the bathroom, it fell in.”
“As for the divorce, I’ve wanted it since our
wedding night. Does that hurt your ego?”
He gripped the steering wheel. “Reason.”
Г
“I don’t love you. Do I need a reason for a
divorce?”
It was like a needle stabbing him. He gritted
his teeth.
“Then let’s get divorced. Plenty of people
want to be Mrs. Harrison.”
Chapter 2
07
David walked in front of me as we entered
the Harrison mansion.
I clutched the divorce papers, and my mood
was like a broken roller coaster.
He had signed quickly and said,
く
“You’re free after the cooling–off period, so
you can suck it up for a month.”
I thought about my future of financial
freedom after the agreement went into effect,
and knew I had to endure it.
Besides, my parents have used the Harrisons‘
name to get ahead for the past three years.
They’d probably come at me with knives if
they knew I was getting a divorce.
David wanted to break up with them.
He had visited my family few times in the
past three years. Every time my parents
asked him for help, he would scoff at me.
“They’re using you as a hostage. How easy is
Г
I took a deep breath, remembering his face.
It was time for my parents to face reality. I
wasn’t their ticket to the top.
I wasn’t used to the Harrisons‘ wealth and I
was fed up with the way things were now.
When I walked in, everyone stared at my
stomach, their faces complicated.
David’s father sat to the left of his
grandmother, glanced at me, and said
nothing.
David’s mother stared at me as I sat down
next to her, frowning slightly.
Even though my grandmother insisted on the

They had never been happy with me.
At first, I tried to fit in, doing what they liked.
I asked what kind of woman David liked.
But after I started working six months ago, I
stopped going to the Harrisons‘ as much.
Their tastes didn’t matter to me anymore.
The coldness of the Harrisons‘ was
unwarranted.
They’d be picky with anyone.
So let’s find someone else.

David’s grandmother stared at David.
He pulled back a chair to sit down, when his
grandmother spoke.
“Kneel!”
David kneeled down.
I was startled and stood up.
“Sarah, sit down.”
His grandmother walked over and slapped
him.
David didn’t move.
David’s mother was embarrassed. “Mom,
く
His grandmother snorted and slammed her
cane on the ground. “Ask him.”
“How many times did you visit the Wang
family girl after she got divorced?”
I was stunned, and thought –
–
Ashley wasn’t going to become Mrs. Harrison.
His lost love was back.
I was glad I had filed for divorce in time, or I’d
be thrown out.
David’s father spoke.
“I told him to go…”
