Chapter 6
All day, Gary couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling weighing on his chest. He had always valued me more than anything, even his own life. If I frowned, he would blame himself endlessly, reflecting on whether he had done enough.
Lately, he realized he had been neglecting me. Selena had taken too much of his
attention, and he knew it. He had resolved to distance himself from her.
But today, she called, crying over the phone, saying she was hurt. Against his better judgment, he went to check on her at the hospital.
As he stood to leave, Selena reached out, her tear–filled eyes pleading. “I know you love Mary,” she said, her voice shaking. “But….. even if I’m just a bed partner, can’t you stay with me a little longer?”
Her words made his chest tighten. He

remembered how he had sent her abroad

Though unintended, he knew he bore responsibility. And now, Selena stood. before him–a reminder of the
consequences of his decisions.
Selena’s parents had jumped to their deaths. after their family went bankrupt–a tragedy Gary couldn’t forget. Once again, guilt weighed him down, and he gave in.
Seeing his hesitation, Selena cried harder, clinging to him as her life depended on it. “Gary, you love me, right?”
Gary remained silent, but my image flashed vividly in his mind.
Selena’s shoulders shook violently, soaking
his shirt with her tears. “You can’t even lie to me?”

“I love you,” Gary finally whispered, his voice empty.
Selena‘ s sorrow turned into delight. She kissed him, pulling him closer, igniting something reckless between them. But just as the fire burned, Gary pushed her away abruptly.
An uneasy feeling overwhelmed him. Without thinking, he dialed my number and sent a flurry of text messages.
No response.
He called Rudy, who reassured him that I had gone to bed early, supposedly to prepare a surprise for him. His tension eased. Selena‘ s insistent touch drew him back, and for a moment, he gave in to temptation.
The next morning, he intended to pick me up for the unveiling ceremony. But
Selena‘ s clinginess had delayed him.
Running late, Gary texted me to head there first, promising to catch up.

When he arrived, a swarm of reporters and cameras was already broadcasting live. He checked his watch repeatedly, scanning the crowd for me.
But I was nowhere to be seen.
The uneasiness in Gary’s heart grew unbearable. His hand trembled as he
gripped the phone, dialing my number over and over, refusing to accept the silence on the other end.
Moments later, the family driver approached with a grim expression. “Sir, Madam hasn’t returned since she gave us all a break last night. Everything of hers at home is gone.”
Gary froze, the phone slipping from his ear. His eyes widened in disbelief. “What… what are you saying?”
“Madam… she seems to have left,” the driver repeated carefully.
A deafening buzz filled Gary’s mind as hist world began to crumble. Without thinking,

he pushed through the crowd, desperate to escape this nightmare.
Just then, a courier appeared, handing him an exquisite gift box.
Gary’s bloodshot eyes fixated on the box. He took it with trembling hands, murmuring to himself, “No… no, Mary promised she would never leave me. This must be a surprise. She’s waiting for me somewhere… waiting for me to find her.”
Yet, his unsteady hands struggled to untie the ribbon. The knot seemed to mock him, revealing his growing dread.
When the box finally opened, his knees. nearly gave way.
Inside were three documents.
The first was a child‘ s B–ultrasound photo.
The second was a miscarriage diagnosis.
And the third… his world shattered as he read the finalized paperwork for the

cancellation of my identity.
For the third time, Gary exhaled heavily, his voice trembling with desperation as he spoke to the crowd. “Mary, you couldn’t tell me you lost the child, but I won’t blame you. I just need you… Please, don’t scare me. Come out, please. If I lose you, I’ll die.”
But no one responded.
The reporters and everyone else simply looked at him, helpless and unsure of what to do.
As Gary’s words hung in the air, I couldn’t help but feel a bittersweet pang in my chest at his deep affection for me. But it was too late now.
Gary wiped his eyes, his hands trembling as he picked up the second document. When he saw the signed divorce
agreement, all the color drained from his face.
Tears fell uncontrollably. His breath

quickened, and with an outburst of rage, he tore the document apart as if it were a
scourge.
He turned to the driver, his eyes filled with fury. “What happened? Mary was fine yesterday! How could this be?!”
The driver, who had served Gary for many years, trembled in fear.
He knew all too well how Gary could become unhinged when it came to me, and now he was at a loss for words, unable to explain the unexplainable.
