Chapter 14: reconsideration
Evelyn walked through the halls, reminding herself to calm down and not let her fury show.
She couldn’t believe this! On her first day in this new place, Caleb decides to show up and ruin her mood. After her father had pleaded with her, something he rarely ever did, to treat Malcolm. But no, Caleb had to ruin it with her stupidity.
“Doctor Evelyn! Doctor!”
Evelyn blinked and turned to see a nurse racing up to her. “Yes?” She said, trying not to transfer her aggression to the innocent nurse.
“I’m so sorry doctor, you can’t be here.”
“I’m going to see the director. Evelyn stared simply and continued walking. The nurse raced up to her.
“Doctor!” She cried, desperation in her voice.
Evelyn got to the director’s office and nodded politely.
“Come in.” The deep voice on the other side said.
Evelyn turned to the nurse. “You may leave now.” She said and walked inside the office.
“Ah, Miss Palmer,” the director, John Deere said. John was a long time friend of her father, they went to school together and both became doctors. Evelyn smiled softly at John.
“Hello, Mr Deere. Evelyn said.
John frowned, noticing her tight smile. “What is the matter?”
Evelyn sighed and rubbed her temples. “I quit.” She said.
John frowned even more. “What is the matter? Did we do anything wrong?”
“No, not you.” Evelyn sighed. She recounted the entire experience with Caleb to the director. “I’m taking the next available flight home. I will not deal with stupid entitled miscreants who have no respect at all.”
“Director John?” A voice called from the door.
“Speak of the devil.” Evelyn hissed under her breath.
Caleb stormed into the director’s office, his gaze focused on the director and completely ignoring her.
“Mr Winthrop.” John said. “To what do I….”
“Is this the best you can do?” Caleb snapped, cutting the director off.
“What ever do you mean, Mr Winthrop.”
“I demand a change of doctors.” Caleb said simply. “I will not accept that Evelyn or whoever her name is to administer treatment to my father. In case you have forgotten, I have the right to choose who administers treatment to my own father.”
Evelyn raised a dark red brow. She couldn’t believe that he was talking as if she wasn’t even in the room. She folded her arms and stared at him, wondering why on earth she had put up with this kind of person for five years of her life.
“Mr Winthrop, please calm down…”
“Do not tell me to calm down! You claim you are the best hospital in town and you call in an unskilled incompetent doctor? You are even more incompetent than her.”
“Mr Deere sir,” Evelyn said sweetly, directing her smile at John. He turned to her, an apologetic look in her eyes.
“I’m so sorry my dear,” He said. “I will resolve this, I promise you. I understand your anger and I will fix this.”
Evelyn shook her head “it’s fine. I’m heading home now. Do have a wonderful day.”
“Evel….”
Before John could finish his statement, she walked out of the door. John sighed heavily and faced Caleb. He couldn’t believe that the famed first son of the Winthrop’s was acting in such a distasteful manner.
In all the years John had known Evelyn, she was the best at whatever she set her mind to do. She had excelled in school, above the best. John himself had been very bothered when she had given up her dreams to get married. But now that she has returned, she had shown them just who was the best again.
“Well?” Caleb snapped in annoyance.
“You have to calm down, Mr Winthrop,” John said calmly.
“When is the new doctor coming in?”
“The new doctor just threatened to leave” John said. “I tried to explain to you, your father’s condition is very very rare, and the only doctor who has been able to successfully carry out that operation is Evelyn Palmer.”
Caleb pretended to be unfazed by the news, but his heart skipped a beat. This was his worst nightmare. “So?”
“So, we had to fly Doctor Palmer in as soon as we could. She is a very busy Doctor and honestly I was very surprised when she accepted to come over here. She is not just a doctor, she is the best shot we have at making sure your father lives.”
“What do you mean?”
“Your father has a few days to live if this operation isn’t carried out immediately. It was either flying her in or flying your father out to her hospital, and I’m sure you know how difficult that could be.”
Caleb raised a brow. “So you’re saying you can’t get another doctor to treat my father?”
“No.” John said simply. “And our best doctor just walked out, she could very well be at the airport by now.”
Caleb felt a bolt of fear for his father’s life. He refused to believe that Evelyn, the Evelyn he had known would turn out to the the last lifeline for his father.
Caleb didn’t want his father to die, but at the same time he wanted nothing to do with Evelyn. Not after all that had gone down between them.
“I’ll be back soon.” Caleb said and without waiting for a response from the director left the office.
Caleb rushed out of the hospital and into the open. He looked around, searching for Evelyn around. A car drove past in front of him, from the window he saw a flash of red hair.
Evelyn.
Caleb rushed to his car and started the engine. He swerved out of the parking lot and raced after Evelyn. He felt his pride bruised and wounded inside him. But he reminded himself that this was for his father.
If anything happened to his father, he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself.
“That damn woman.” He hissed and hit the steering wheel.
