Chapter 19
Chapter nineteen: two choices
Evelyn sighted a familiar head of blond waves. Her eyes narrowed when she saw the ward the woman had just come out from.
“Aurelia!” Evelyn called out, making her away over to Caleb’s mistress.
Aurelia turned, a surprised look on her face which quickly morphed into one of disgust. “Oh it’s you” she said. “What do you want?”
Evelyn couldn’t believe the guts on this woman. “Where did you just come out from?”
“I came to see my father–in–law.” Aurelia said with a shrug.
Evelyn gasped. “You did what?!”
No one was allowed to see Malcolm. Not even a nurse. Evelyn had prohibited anyone from going in as these were the very crucial moment’s before his Operation. She didn’t want any form of complications as the man’s immune system was failing already.
“How did
you get in there?! Do you have any idea how much danger you could have put him in?!”
“Relax, please.” Aurelia said with an eye roll. “It’s not like I’m doing anything, I just went in to see him.”
“And who issued you a pass to do that?”
Aurelia glare at her. “Look, you have no right to tell me where I need to go or not. You’re not my mother, and honestly you’re getting really annoying.”
Evelyn suppressed the urge to slap Aurelia across her face. Was this who Caleb had chosen over her?! This dumb bitch?!
“I see now how truly stupid you are.” Evelyn said, sneering at Aurelia like she was the scum of the earth. “Tale that stupidity elsewhere and do not even dare to mingle it into someone’s life! This is a matter of life and death and you waltz in here, thinking it’s some kind of show?!”

Evelyn turned to see Caleb walking in. Aurelia instantly sighted him and ran over to him, grabbing his arm and making what was supposed to be a cute face..

“Darling! This woman won’t let me go in and see dad!” Aurelia whined in a high pitched voice.
Evelyn nearly gagged. She turned her gaze to Caleb and her eyes hardened. “Mr Winthrop,” She said, her voice cold. “It seems you do not agree to my terms, do you?”
Caleb frowned. “I never said that. I….”
“I remember telling you that rule number is you keeping your baggage out of this hospital if you want us to work together.” Evelyn said, flashing Aurelia a disgust filled look.
“Yes, you did say that.” Caleb said.
“Then do explain to me, what she is doing here waltzing around my patient’s ward?!”
“Watch your mouth bitch!” Aurelia shouted at Evelyn.
“No you watch your mouth.” Caleb shunned her. He shook her off him and glared at her. “What exactly is your problem?! Is it so difficult for you to take simple instructions?!”
Aurelia frowned. “Why are you siding her?!”
“I’m not….”
“But you are! Everytime! You always side her. It’s always Evelyn! It has always been Evelyn!”
“Aurelia,” Caleb said.
“Don’t Aurelia me! You want her back don’t you?! That’s why you’re running after her like an obedient puppy!”
Evelyn watched the spectacle, an amused look on her face.
“My father’s life is at stake here!” Caleb shouted, silencing Aurelia. “And she is the only one who can help me. So please, do forgive if I do not share your lack of regard for my father’s life”
“But I….”
“As much as I would love to continue watching you two teat each other apart,” Evelyn spoke up in a loud voice making both Caleb and Aurelia turn to her. “I have patients to see to. Please take this talk of yours outside, the hospital isn’t a fancy ground
for such nonsense.”
“You damn bitch! Who the fuck do you think you are?!” Aurelia screamed and stormed up to Evelyn. She tried to grab her hair but Evelyn was quicker, grabbing her hand and twisting it at an odd angle.
Aurelia cried out in pain, hitting Evelyn’s hand and trying to get her off. “Let go of me you crazy bitch!”

“Evelyn, please stop.” Caleb said.

“Shut up Caleb.” Evelyn snapped at him. She released Aurelia and threw her towards Caleb. He caught her, staring at Evelyn with unreadable eyes.
“One more word from you, and it’s jail.” Evelyn said, throwing her coldest look at Aurelia. She turned to Caleb and said: “Have a day you deserve.” She turned and walked away.
“I can’t believe you!” Aurelia screamed at Caleb. She pulled herself away from him and glared at him. “you couldn’t even do anything to help me! You still love her, don’t you!”
Caleb sighed. He turned and started walking down the hall. Aurelia raced after him.
“Caleb!”
“I didn’t love her, I never did.” Caleb said quietly. He found that he couldn’t even believe his words.
“Oh really?” Aurelia scoffed. “Liar.”
Caleb glared at her but she was looking away. He felt very conflicted inside him.
Evelyn or Aurelia.
He didn’t want to be forced to choose. Not for any reason. Evelyn was in his past now, she was the wife he didn’t want. He was with Aurelia now, the one he wanted.
But why did it feel so wrong to him?

“Wow bro, your life is just like a movie.”
Caleb glared hotly at Lucas. “Oh yeah, you have no idea how exhausting it is.”
“Yeah, it must be really exhausting having to choose between two very sexy women.” Mason said with an eye roll.
Caleb drank more of his alcohol. He had just finished recounting his experiences to his friends, and to his surprise they laughed at him.
“You divorced Evelyn didn’t you.” Mason asked, pouring him more alcohol. “Why are you crying now?”
“I’m not crying.” Caleb grumbled. “It’s just….”

“She’s better now, and it hurts you.” Lucas said, finishing the sentence.
“Not exactly.” Caleb said and sighed. He gulped down his shot of whiskey and asked for more.
“Perhaps this season isn’t exactly yours.” Mason said and patted his back. “We’re always here for the full gist.”
Caleb punched him in the gut. He burst out laughing. Soon Lucas joined him. Caleb rolled his eyes and went back to his drink.
“Imbeciles” he said under his breath.
“King of imbeciles.” They taunted back.
