Chapter 2
Staring at the divorce paper in her hands, Evelyn sank down to the bed as she wept. She could hardly believe that her five–year marriage was going to be over after she put her signature on that paper.
Her eyes scanned through the contract term agreement. She was going to be compensated with thirty percent of the Winthrop’s in order to set him free.
Her mind wandered back to five years ago when she heard the news of the arranged marriage to Caleb. She could say she was the most excited girl in their town. Who wouldn’t be excited at such news of getting married to someone you have had a diehard crush on for almost twenty years of your life? That was more like a big dream come true.
Though she knew that Caleb was never pleased about their wedding, and she had heard rumors several times that he was in love with another lady. At that moment, Evelyn didn’t care about anyone; she just wanted Caleb for herself and was hoping he was going to warm up to her. She fully believed that it was just a matter of time and Caleb was going to get used to her and see her the way she saw him. But she was wrong.
Over the years, she tried her best in every aspect to fill every part of his life, sacrificing her dreams of becoming a surgeon and settling for being a full–time housewife. She ensured his breakfast, lunch, and dinner were fully prepared by her without missing his favorites. She helped him with work from the office, ironed his clothes, and performed every duty of a wife to him.
She could tell that he was getting fond of her, but he never once expressed his love for her. Instead, he always expressed his gratitude through passionate moments, making her climb through several heights with him and fulfilling her every sexual
desire.
Their sensual nights of conversation about how his work went, accompanied by an oily massage from him and then a blissful moment of him sliding in and out of her, gave her assurance that he was going to fall for her, as he was so addicted to her body that a day nearly passed without him confessing that.
But then, threats stepped in when she started receiving texts about him having a mistress somewhere. Even though she knew he didn’t love her, she trusted him enough to believe that he was having an affair outside.
Worried? Of course, she was worried. Even though she trusted him, she was too curious to have her doubts filled. That was when she discovered the truth, that her husband was indeed having a mistress.
She became insecure to know that her husband was meeting another lady aside her. But she had herself consoled that she was his main wife, and perhaps, Aurelia was going to remain his mistress.
With each night he returned to her arms, craving her, she had herself consoled that it was just a matter of time and he was going to love her back. Maybe when she had given him an heir.
With those thoughts, she managed to keep herself consoled for years, until he just muttered to her, painting it to her face that she meant nothing to him, but a bait. A bait he had used to gain power, a bait he had used to stand strong again on his feet.
He never loved her. He used her. The pain, the truth… Everything hurt for her to know that she didn’t matter to him. It wasn’t his fault, was it? She blamed herself fully for throwing herself to him, even though she knew that he never loved her, for giving herself stupid hope that he was going to love her one day.
To think that she stashed away her dreams of being a doctor just to please him. All her efforts were just down the drain.
Back while she was still in college, she was the youngest, most beautiful, and brightest. She had several guys falling down their knees, begging for just a date with her. But because of her stupid crush on Caleb, she always tossed that aside, replacing it
with the hope that he would ask her out one day.
Now was the exact time for her to wake up from her high dreams and face reality. She needed to get herself away from the house, and yes, she was going to sign the divorce paper.
A soft knock on the door jolted her from her thoughts as she jerked back to reality.
“Come in!” Evelyn muttered, wiping her tears off her face as she sat up straight, placing the divorce paper aside.
“I already microwaved the food. Dinner is ready,” Megan, her housemaid, announced as she walked inside the master bedroom. One moment she was walking in, her tone ecstatic, the next, her step faltered as her face pulled into a frown.
“Are you alright?” Her tone filled with concern as she queried, hurrying to the bed.
“Yes, I’m fine,” Evelyn nodded her head. She intended to keep it away from the middle–aged woman, but she knew Megan was going to raise a suspicion. Speaking about the food, she had asked Megan to microwave the food earlier, but then, Caleb was already out, so she didn’t see the need.
“Okay, I’m leaving,” Evelyn finally spoke,,handing the divorce paper to her. Megan was a lady she cherished and had gotten used to as her acquaintance in Ebony’sville.
Staring down at the papers, Megan knew this was for the better. She had watched Evelyn over the years do all her best to retain Caleb’s love, which was just overlooked.
“I’m together with you in this. I will support you. Love is never forced; it’s an emotion. Let go of what you cherish; if it returns, it’s meant to be yours,” Megan advised.
Evelyn nodded her head. With a sigh, she didn’t think twice as she scribbled her signature.
“I’ll need your help in packing.”
