Chapter 26
Chapter twenty six: redirected anger
Evelyn inhaled and exhaled slowly. The penthouse looked the same as always, like a house straight out of a movie. Backdropped against the morning sun it looked ethereal. Evelyn made her way over to the front door and hit the doorbell.
The door opened to reveal Megan, the head housekeeper.
“Ma’am?!” Megan exclaimed, her eyes wide and a smile on her face. “Oh my goodness! It’s you!” She said, happiness in her voice.
“Hello Megan,” Evelyn said with a smile of her own. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
“Please, come in!” Megan said and moved out of the way. She pushed her head into the house and yelled out; “everyone! Evelyn is here!”
Evelyn walked into the foyer, her eyes instantly noticing that some changes had happened. The housekeepers greeted her warmly, excited to see her again.
“I had no idea you were coming back!” Megan exclaimed. “We were ordered by Mr Winthrop to make the house as presentable as possible! With the amount of orders he dished out one would think a goddess was visiting!”
Evelyn laughed shyly. “Oh please, nothing of the sort.”
“His father’s treatment was moved back to the house, we recently got news about it.”
“That’s right.” Evelyn said. “I’m his doctor.”
Megan’s eyes filled with tears. “I’m so happy to hear that ma’am. You’re a doctor? That’s wonderful. I—”
“What are you all doing standing around?!” Caleb’s voice thundered through the foyer.
Megan gasped. She turned around to see Caleb descending the stairs. One look at his face with his furrowed brows and clenched jaw told her that he was in a foul mood.
“Mr Winthrop! You’re back so early.” Megan said. The other house keeper scurried away, not wanting to incur his wrath.
Evelyn folded her arms across her chest, a deadpan expression on her face. “Don’t you think it’s too early for all this?” She questioned. “It’s barely even seven.”
Before seconds the foyer emptied out till it was Evelyn and Caleb alone.
“You,” Caleb said darkly and stormed up to Evelyn. “Have a lot of explaining to do.”

“Please,” Evelyn said sarcastically. “Fire away.”
“You have kids?!” He exploded, not even spending a single moment.

Evelyn rolled her eyes. She knew just who had caused this, none other than Aurelia. Her suspicions turned out to be spot on.
Evelyn shrugged. “Yes, I have kids. They’re at school right now. And so?” She said coolly, observing him through her lashes.
“You had kids?! Really Evelyn?” Caleb said.
“Yes.” Evelyn replied. “Now can we go and take care of—” she didn’t get to finish. Caleb grabbed her by the shoulders and slammed ehr into the closest wall.
“Who’s kids are they?” He hissed, his voice full of anger.
Evelyn felt her heart skip a beat. His face was contorted in anger, his jaw clenched tightly she feared he might shatter his teeth. So much if emotion from someone who didn’t give a damn about her.
“Why does it matter to you?!” She shot back at him. “You mean nothing to me now! We’re divorced, and both gone out separate ways. What I do is none of your business. And my kids are most definitely none of your business.”
“Whose kids are they dammit!” Caleb raised his voice, his fingertips digging into her skin. “Answer me!”
“Why would I do that?!”
“Because I deserve to know! Is that clear?! Now, I’ll ask you one last time. Whose kids are they?”
Evelyn glared hotly at him. She couldn’t believe the show he was putting on. Why did he care? What did it mean to him? All throughout their marriage he hasn’t wanted anything to do with kids. Why was the news of her having kids so upsetting to him?
They’re not yours.” Evelyn spat in anger. “You can burn in hell for all I care. ”
Caleb released her. He turned sharply and she could see his body vibrating with anger. He paced the floors, his hands curled into tight fists. Evelyn rolled her eyes.
What an unnecessary display.
“How old are they?” Caleb suddenly asked, turning to Evelyn sharply.
Evelyn felt her heart skip. Dammit. He had become suspicious. And Caleb being suspicious wasn’t a good thing because he did everything in his power to uncover the truth.
“Why?” Evelyn asked, hoping to stall for time. “I should get to my duties and stop this talk..”

“Evelyn,” He said, controlling his anger. “I am so not in the mood for your sarcasm right now. Answer the damn question.”
“I don’t have time for this,” Evelyn said and turned to leave.

“Get back here!” He shouted at her, his voice striking a cord in her heart. “Answer me when I talk to you

Evelyn turned and looked at him. She contemplated telling him the truth or a lie. “They’re four.” She said simply, opting to go with the truth.
“Four?” Caleb said, running the math on his head. “How long has it been since we got divorced?”
Evelyn shrugged nonchalantly. “I don’t know.” She said.
Caleb paced this floor, his mind reeling. It had been four years since he signed those papers. Her kids were four, she had been on the pill throughout their marriage. He had personally made sure of it.
That means….the only viable answer was that she had cheated on him.
He looked at Evelyn and he felt his world shatter. He couldn’t believe she could do something like that.
“How could you?” He asked her.
She stared at him, no atom of remorse on her face. “Please show me to Malcolm’s room, I need to take his vitals for today to ensure he is in perfect health.”
“Evelyn,”
Evelyn turned and headed up the stairs. “I’ll find him myself.” She said with a dismissive wave. “After all I lived in this house for five years.”
“I’m not done talking to you!”
Well I’m done listening to you, Mr Winthrop.” She said with a note of finality in her voice.
Caleb was left in the foyer alone, a pain he couldn’t name consuming his heart.
