Chapter twenty seven: a necessary evil
“Did you cheat on me?”
Evelyn froze. She heard Caleb’s footsteps get up closer behind her. He walked past her and stopped in front of her. She stared at him, the emotions playing out in his blue eyes.
Pain, anger, hurt,
Evelyn replayed his question in her head. She found it laughable. He was her first everything. And even after their marriage, she hadn’t been with any other man. He was her everything. And yet he stands in front of her and questions if she cheated on
him.
But Evelyn knew that the kids were his. There was no denying. That night of passion she hadn’t taken the pills.
If she lets him know the kids are his, he will immediately stake claim to them. And she didn’t want that to ever happen. No one will take her children away from her. Not even their father.
“What’s taking you so damn long to answer?” Caleb asked, tilting his head to the side. His eyes roamed her face searching for what she wasn’t aware of.
Evelyn made her decision there and then.
She raised her chin and smiled coyly. “What? Shocked?”
Caleb’s eyes widened. “What?” He whispered, disbelief on his face.
He waited, he really waited for Evelyn to laugh it off and say it was a joke. But she didn’t. The haughty look on her face didn’t change on bit.
Caleb felt his world shatter.
“Was this…Evelyn was this why you wanted a divorce?” He asked, expecting her to say no. Expecting her to say anything else.
She shrugged without a care in the world. “You want me to lie?”
It suddenly dawned on Caleb that he knew nothing about Evelyn. Everything he thought he knew was crumbling to dust before his face. He stared at her, he couldn’t believe she did something like that while looking so innocent all the damn time.
“You were screwing someone else while we were married?!” He couldn’t take it anymore and asked. She laughed, her voice soft yet mocking.

“You didn’t think you were the only one I was fucking, did you?”
Her words felt like a sword straight to his heart. “Get out of my house.”

“Why? For dealing you with the same hand I was dealt with?!” She shot back at him. “Did you ever for once throughout five years of marriage love me?! No. Not even for a single moment! I forced you into marriage, that’s what you said huh?”
Caleb narrowed his eyes. He didn’t want her to see the internal turmoil he was having. She was right. He never loved her, but he hadn’t stopped to think for once that maybe she would seek that love outside.
“You were fucking Aurelia, weren’t you?! While we were married, even till now. And you stand there playing Mr holy, judging me!”
“Why didn’t you say anything?!”
“Anything like what?” Evelyn scoffed. “Oh please, love me honey! Love me for I’m so lonely!”
“You had no right! Evelyn you had no right to do what you did!”
“Well neither did you!” Evelyn shouted back. She could feel her throat clogging up with tears. It dawned on her that she hadn’t had this conversation with him in the past.
She had no idea it would be this painful.
“Do you know how much it hurt?” She asked, her voice a soft whisper. “Knowing that you were thinking of another while you were with me. Knowing that you only saw me as…..as a little sister. Do you know how much it hurt knowing that I can never have my husband all to myself?”
Caleb looked away the sight of her teary eyes striking a cord in his heart. He didn’t know her feelings were this strong.
“Do you have any idea? Knowing that I could never make you happy the way she did? You were once all I ever wanted.”
Caleb sighed and rubbed his temples. “Evelyn, please, that’s enough.”
“It’s enough when I say it is. You’re shocked I have kids? I’m shocked you have the audacity to think you still have me wrapped around your finger like the starry eyed virgin I was.”
Caleb glared hotly at her. The mental image of another man touching her was driving him insane. The thought that another man would get to hear her soft moans, touch her skin and–
He shook his head to clear his thoughts.
“Get out of my house. Now.”
“Good luck with that ” She scoffed. “I’m here as a doctor. I think you were quick to forget that, Mr Winthrop,”

Chapter 27
Each time she called him Mr Winthrop, he felt like punching a wall.
“Well as of today you are fired.” Caleb said darkly. “I don’t want you any where near me.”
“The feeling is mutual.” She said with an eye roll. “Now, lead me to Malcolm’s room. I’m way behind schedule as is.”
She turned and headed down the hallway. She opened a door and peaked her head inside. Caleb watched her, and he couldn’t describe how he felt.
He couldn’t understand why he was so hurt if he didn’t love her. He raised a hand and gripped his chest, the pain settling there numbing.
Why did it hurt so much?
He had spent so long convincing himself he didn’t care about her, he didn’t care what she did or where she went. He had convinced himself that they were long over.
Yet why was he still invested in her life?
Why did he want to know everything she did?
The one he loved was Aurelia, no one else. He had always loved her. Long before Evelyn was his wife.
So why?
“You do know I have other patients to attend to?! Right?!” Evelyn called from the hallway, her voice loud. “Where is he?”
“Evelyn, I told
you to—”
“Ma’am,” Megan called from the stairs. “He would like to see you,”
Evelyn smiled brightly. She walked down the hall and brushed past Caleb. “Thank you Megan, as always so dependable.”
Megan nodded. “Right this way please. He heard your voice, I guess you two were really loud.”
Evelyn turned and looked at Caleb. “Oh well, just a little misunderstanding.” She said. She turned back to Megan. “Let’s go please.”
