- 3.
“You know what I hate most? Your arrogant,
know–it–all attitude,” she says, her eyes filled
with hatred, “I’m the Miller’s daughter now,
and you don’t even know who your real
parents are.”
I smirk, glance down, and say quietly,
“Really?”
“Are you sure you don’t know?”
I see the fear in her eyes, I laugh to myself,
stolen things always make people nervous.
<
Poor me, last time I really did think I was a
fake.
I hear the doorknob turning.
Suddenly, something rolls down the stairs in
front of me.
I realize Bethany is lying on the ground,
unconscious.
Mike shoves me out of the way, I hit the
railing, I’ll probably have a bruise on my arm.
Dad and my other brother, Joe, walk in and
see Bethany tumbling down the stairs.
Except for Joe, everyone is convinced I
pushed her.
I’m sitting calmly in a chair in the hospital
waiting room.
Mike is getting angrier by the second, he
grabs me, pulls me out of the chair, and
grabs my chin, “Can’t you just try to get along
with your sister?”
I try to pull his hand away, but I can’t.
L
I don’t get why Mike cares about Bethany so
much.
He’s usually so careful, but now he’s believing
anything she says, it’s weird.
Is he hiding something with Bethany?
Is he helping her?
How else could Bethany get back into the
Miller family so easily?
If he wasn’t helping, why wouldn’t Dad take
Bethany to get a DNA test himself?
It gives me chills.
Dad speaks up, “Mike, this is a hospital.”
Joe chimes in, sticking up for me.
The doctor comes, says Bethany just has
some scrapes, nothing serious.
I feel bad for her, she’s so dedicated to
messing with me, she’ll hurt herself to get
what she wants.
She must have done this before, she rolled
down all those stairs. only got a few
scratches, she can control her injuries, I’m
almost impressed.
“It was an accident, don’t blame her,” Bethany
says, trying to get me out of trouble.
She’s trying to help me, but she’s just
confirming I pushed her.
Of course, Dad gets angry and tries to hit me.
I dodge the blow, “Going to hit me again? I’m
not your daughter anymore, I’ll call the cops,
you want the Miller name dragged through
the mud?”
The Millers care most about their reputation,
Dad hesitates.
“I’m sorry, don’t yell at Dad, he’s just
worried,” Bethany says, her voice still shaky, I
want to tape her mouth shut.
“Mind your own business?” I turn and glare at
her, “Be careful on the stairs, and don’t mess
with me again.”
Mike doesn’t like my attitude, “You think you
<
can survive without the Millers?”
I ask, “Are the Millers the only ones who
matter?”
Mike doesn’t know what to say.
Chapter 2
There’s always someone better, right? He’s
got to know that.
Besides, Miller Corp is going downhill fast,
he’s more concerned with the drama about
the real and fake daughter?
That’s a joke.
