Chapter 10
“Don’t you know that every time I see you getting close to another woman, my heart feels like it’s being stabbed?”
Jacob could no longer hold back. He reached out and pulled me into his arms, his grip tightening.
“I’m so sorry, Mia. I was so arrogant.”
“I didn’t understand my feelings. I always believed you weren’t good enough for me…
་་
“It wasn’t until you left this time that I realized the truth about my heart!”
“Uncle Willy told me about all the grievances you endured. I never knew the ring resulted from your hard work and I had no idea about your years of unspoken love.”
After saying the last sentence, he lost all his strength.

I felt like an outsider.
His heartfelt confession failed to resonate
with me.
Sixteen years of unrequited love had exhausted me. I no longer dared to start
over.
I gently pushed him away and said in a hoarse voice. “Jacob, it’s not your fault.”
“I’m just not good enough for you. You’re a soaring eagle, and I’ve clung to your shadow.”
I didn’t blame him.
If I were in his position, I might have thought the same.
How could a parentless orphan like her be good enough for a man from a wealthy family?
“Let’s just end it here, okay?”
Jacob’s face was ashen as he spoke, his voice filled with resignation.

“Why, Mia? How did we end up like this?”
“Can’t you give me one last chance?”
I tilted my head up, trying to blink back the
tears. I offered him a weak smile.
“We were destined to pass each other by.”
Deep down, I knew the truth.
Jacob felt guilty toward me and he finally realized his feelings.
Being with him would mean I could avoid. decades of hardship. He would provide me with everything I could ever want.
I didn’t have to worry about making a living
anymore.
But I couldn’t forget the hurt he caused me because of this.
I looked at him and said softly.
“Jacob, I’ve let go. You should too.”
“Now, I only have sisterly feelings for you.”

“I think you should find someone who is truly your equal.”
It was my most heartfelt wish for him.
Jacob stared at me in silence for a long while. Finally, he buried his face in his hands. His voice shaking as he said, “All right, Mia. I’ll let you go.”
He looked at me with red eyes and Adam’s apple rolled.
“Then we’ll still be good siblings, right?”
I met his gaze and nodded silently. “Yes.”
The tension in the air was almost suffocating. I didn’t want to stay here longer, so I stood up and left.
I could feel his intense stare on my back, but I didn’t dare to turn around.
We’re just not meant to be.
He thrived on challenges while I craved stability.

ultimately drive us apart even if we tried to make it work. We could end things here.
After that day, I never saw Jacob again.

Two years later…
Jacob’s assistant came to find me. That’s when I learned he had gifted me two villas.
I pursed my lips and refused, “No, thank you. Please return them to him.”
The assistant stared at me for a long time before finally speaking.
“Miss Mia, Mr. Jacob is ill. His biggest wish is to see you one last time.”
My heart sank as I dropped my coffee cup, shattering it into pieces. My hands trembled so much I couldn’t even pick up the broken pieces.
I scoffed, “Is he stooping this low? Making up a sick excuse just to get me back?”
