Chapter 11
I stood up angrily and stormed out.
When I got home, my chest felt tight with
sadness.
I scrolled through Jacob’s social media. Hist last post was from three months ago.
The announcement of his engagement to
Catherine.
He got engaged to her not long after he returned. They’re a perfect match. It was just a mistake.
There’s no need to let this mistake drag on any longer.
I heard that Catherine was pregnant with his child and the baby must be due soon. They would be a happy family.
I felt much better after comforting myself with these thoughts.
Day by day, time passed. I’d made a name

for myself in the design world.
My teacher didn’t have a daughter, so I became her goddaughter. She helped me a lot and I promised to take care of her in her
old age.
When I got home today, I could tell something was wrong.
She was holding a letter, looking at me with a troubled expression. “This is a letter from your hometown. You …

My eyes landed on the letter. After a moment, I reached out and took it.
Jacob was dead.
My mind was racing. I didn’t even notice the letter slip from my hand.
Wasn’t he engaged? Wasn’t he supposed to be happy?
How could he die like that?
My eyes instantly welled up.
My godmother walked over and patted me

on the shoulder. “What did the letter say?”
I finally found my voice and shook my head. “It’s nothing.”
After sitting on the couch, I grabbed all my
documents.
“Mom, I have some other things to do at the company. I’ll head over there.”
I didn’t know why I had grabbed all these things. My tears fell onto the letter in my hands, and I smudged the writing on it when I stood downstairs.
So many people have pursued me over the past two years. But none of them had ever captured my heart.
I knew it was hopeless to think about being with Jacob.
A chill crept over me as I heard someone
say.
“Miss Mia, are you all right?”
I looked up and saw the new intern at our

company.
He tilted his head slightly as he noticed my
red, swollen eyes. “Ma’am, are you upset about something?”
“If you can’t let go, you must face it. Otherwise, it’ll weigh on your heart forever.”
I grabbed his hand. “I want to go to Riverdale, can you help me book a plane ticket?”
I held his hand tightly, my voice trembling and my eyes red.
He was right. Jacob was dead, so I had to go back. Whether it’s to repay the kindness he’s shown me all these years or for something else.

I’m carrying his favorite yellow roses towards Jacob’s grave.
Someone was already there.

Seeing me arrive, Catherine blinked her swollen eyes and spoke sarcastically.
“Even in his final moments, he thought of you. I can’t believe you’re this heartless.”
“I’m carrying his child, but he still refused to marry me. Only when he found out he was terminally ill did he finally agree.”
“I know, he just wanted to give you peace of mind.”
After venting her emotions, Catherine
turned and left.
My gaze fell upon the photo before me. Jacob wore that same carefree and wild smile in the picture I remembered.
I spoke softly, “Jacob, may you rest in peace.”
