“What did you mean down there?” His eyes were red, his hands gripping my shoulders.
I bit my lip, flashbacks of the joy I’d felt at the hospital, learning I was pregnant, mingled with the terror of the fire.
“Answer me! What did I make you lose? Was it… the dream?”
For a moment, I almost believed he was that Ethan.
“I wasn’t the only one who died in that fire.” My voice cracked, and tears finally welled up.
Ethan’s grip tightened, his voice hoarse. “Who
else? Tell me! Mia, who else?!”
I looked at him, dazed. His eyes were
bloodshot.

“It doesn’t matter anymore, Ethan. We won’t
lose anyone again. There was no beginning, so there won’t be that ending.”
I pushed his hands off my shoulders and ran
down the stairs.
Behind the rooftop door, I heard Ethan’s sobs.
“Mia, I’m sorry.”
“Mia, I was wrong.”
