Chapter 6
What’s wrong with me?
What was wrong was that I had already made up my mind to leave. But I didn’t want to argue, so I gently patted William’s hand.
“We’ll talk about it after I’m done, okay?”
My professor was ecstatic about the success of my latest paper.
“This is incredible work! But… are you sure you’re ready for the research institute? Life there can be dull, you know. Experiments and data, day in and day out. Can you handle the isolation?”
I nodded, the memory of William’s condescending tone in the car still fresh in

my mind.
I straightened up and spoke with a quiet yet firm resolve. “Don’t worry, Professor. I won’t bring any shame to your name.”
He chuckled, shaking his head in disbelief. “You? You’re one of the best–handpicked by the government for this position. Let me make it clear: I’m the lucky one to have you on my team.”
As I left his office, I noticed my junior colleague glaring through the window at me.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, a little curious.
“Miss Victoria,” she fumed, “wasn’t that your boyfriend I just saw outside? He was drinking bubble tea with a woman! Isn’t that totally inappropriate? Doesn’t he respect boundaries? Isn’t this basically a betrayal?”

I gave a faint smile, my tone even. “It’s fine. That’s his… sister.”
Her eyebrows shot up in disbelief. “Sister?”
I could understand her confusion. William had lost both his parents when he was young, and Ava’s family had taken him in. Later, when William became successful, he naturally helped Ava–his so–called sister.
But my junior colleague wasn’t buying it. Her indignation only grew.
“Really? Sister? That’s laughable! Classic green tea behavior! Senior, let me handle this for you. I’ll tear her apart!”
I quickly grabbed her arm, stopping her from rushing in. “Don’t do anything rash.”

I’d tried all of that before–arguing, fighting, and accusing–only for William to look at me coldly and say.
“Victoria, you’re being ridiculous. You, of all people, should understand my relationship with Ava. Jealousy like this is beneath you.”
He was right–jealousy was pointless. Especially now. I didn’t want to cause any drama before I left.
So, I told my junior that I would be leaving soon and asked her to help me keep it a secret.
She hesitated. “So… are you still going through with the wedding?”
I shook my head slowly.
“No,” I whispered softly. “I’m leaving. There’s

no point anymore.”
The words just fell out of me.
Before I could explain further, I heard William’s voice from behind me.
“Victoria, where are you going?”
