Lily cried when Samuel left. He hugged her and smiled. “It’s alright. You still have Dr.

After he left, I comforted Lily. She handed me a drawing.
“Dr. Sanders, I hid one of Samuel’s drawings. But it feels wrong. Can you give it back to
him?”
I glanced at the drawing. It was a picture of
me working at the hospital. Had Samuel
known me before? I called him, but he said
he’d only tell me if I agreed to be with him.
A week later, I read about David and Amelia
online. Amelia’s accusations had caused
David’s company’s stock to plummet. He publicly announced their divorce, claiming
their relationship was over long before the
incident. He denied orchestrating Amelia’s

daily outside his company. After two weeks, a haggard–looking David appeared before the media. He announced, “I’m dissolving the
company. I won’t be living in this city
anymore.”
I was shocked. His company was everything
to him. He’d worked so hard for it, even
entering a loveless marriage for its sake. Why
would he dissolve it?
That night, David called from an unknown
number. His voice was weary. “Evelyn, I’m so
tired. Can you play a game with me?”
I remembered him asking the same thing
years ago, at the hospital. We’d been so
happy then. Those carefree days were gone
forever.

outside my window had wilted.
