Chapter 5
Grace’s POV
After I sued Sylvia, not a day went by without Simon appearing, begging me to drop the charges.
“Grace, Sylvia was just not herself at the time. Can’t you be a little more considerate
with her situation?”
I couldn’t help but laugh at his desperation. “Are you saying she didn’t mean to kill me?” I shot back, disgust creeping into my voice. “She deserves some time in jail to think it
over.”
“Come on, Grace! How can a grieving woman handle that? Please! What do you want me to do? Do you want me to kneel in front of you? I’ll do it!” Simon negotiated, his voice rising in a panic.
In a moment of sheer desperation, he dropped to his knees right there. Honestly? Watching him squirm gave me a twisted

thrill, but mostly, it just felt pathetic.
“Even if you kneel all your life, my decision’s not gonna change, Simon,” I said firmly. “In fact, even if Sylvia herself apologized, I wouldn’t care. Quit trying to convince me to let it slide.”
Just after he finally left, the lawyer I hired showed up at my ward.
He reviewed the case with me and assured me Sylvia was definitely going to face consequences for her crime.
But that bitch was too confident she’d win the case. When she appeared in court, she had the nerve to boast, “I’ve got the best lawyer in the entire country. ‘Know who
hired him? Simon. You’re doomed.”
I just rolled my eyes and glanced at my lawyer.
He met my eyes with a reassuring smile. “No need to worry,” he said, and I believed
him.

When Sylvia heard my lawyer’s name, her expression shifted from confidence to panic. I watched fear etched on her face as a triumphant grin inevitably appeared on my lips.
I had hired Magnus Ainsworth, a well- known lawyer in the field. He’s got an unbeatable record of cases he’d won.
Most people couldn’t even contact him, but I could ask anytime since he was the son of my mom’s best friend and always treated me like family.
Sure enough, Sylvia was found guilty and sentenced to three years in jail for intentional harm, and had to pay all my medical bills. It was time for her to face the
bars, and she went nuts protesting.
Once I recovered, I started getting ready to file for divorce from Simon.
Thankfully, knowing he wouldn’t stand a chance in court, he no longer delayed agreeing to the settlement.

When I got him to sign the divorce papers, I knew I could start anew.
My body, my mind, my soul–I felt liberated.
I was ready to embrace life on my terms, having wasted far too much time on Simon; it was time to focus on my own
future.
I owed it partly to my lawyer. To express my gratitude, I invited Magnus to dinner, fully expecting him to decline since he was always buried in cases. But that night, he
didn’t.
He was known for his workaholic tendencies, and I hadn’t seen him much since he dove into his law career. Every previous invitation had been met with a polite refusal, so I was surprised when he accepted the invitation.

ease.
After dinner, he mentioned he wanted to head home, offering me a ride.
His apartment was just a few blocks away from mine. It was not a coincidence; Mom had bought a place nearby to stay close to her best friend.
As we stepped out of the car, I invited him inside. Mom and Dad hadn’t seen him in forever and often wondered how he was doing.
“Why not? It’s been ages,” he replied with a sheepish smile.
But just as we were about to go in, I heard a familiar voice call out, “Darling.”
I turned to see my ex–husband approaching. Anyone who could see him could tell he was utterly defeated. “Darling,” he said again, his voice pleading, “I’m begging you, give me one last chance.”
“This time, I swear I’ll make it right. No

more Sylvia. Just you and me again,” he promised. His head hung low, unable to
meet my eyes.
I could see it–he had lost all the confidence that once came from my endless forgiveness. I bet it finally sank into him—I could actually leave without coming back to him.
