Chapter 1
Chapter 1
What would you do if, while going for a prenatal check–up, you ran into your ex–boyfriend–the same one you once slapped and called a jerk?
In the hospital corridor, a nurse’s voice echoed, “Number 076, Lillian Lewis!”
Allian
llian quickly got up and entered the doctor’s office. The doctor wore a mask, but his high nose bridge and deep–set eyes made him look young. As soon as she sat down, she heard the doctor’s low voice “Lillian, here for a check–up?”
That voice… Lillian would recognize it even after a thousand years! She abruptly looked up as the doctor casually removed his mask. That face–could it be anyone else but Daniel
Martin?
Lillian froze, instinctively wanting to grab the medical report on the table and leave. In the next moment, a warm hand rested on hers. Daniel held her hand, a slight smile on his lips. “What’s the matter? Where’s that courage you had when you slapped me in front of everyone at the school auditorium, calling me a jerk?”
Lillian stayed still, head hanging in silence like a timid quail. Under her tense gaze, Daniel leisurely flipped through her report, then said, “Let’s start with a 4D ultrasound.”
Lillian felt a jolt of alarm and blurted out, “Isn’t that to check for deformities? What’s your
point?”

Daniel closed the report with a faint smile. “Not bad for a finance major. You sure know a
lot.”
Lillian was speechless. Back when Daniel was studying for his exams, she’d spent every night helping him memorize this dry information. She hadn’t expected that this knowledge would be useful to her now, pregnant. Suppressing her chaotic emotions, Lillian took her report and walked out. Only when she disappeared through the doorway did Daniel look
away.

On her way up to the ultrasound room on the fourth floor, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She glanced at the caller ID and answered without expression “What is it?”
Chapter 1
Jacob Evans, her husband, spoke coldly “My colleague said they saw you at the hospital Finally decided to get rid of the kid?”
Lillian pressed her lips together but couldn’t hold back her anger. “Keep dreaming! This is my body, and he’s my child. I’m the only one who gets to decide what happens to him. You don’t get a say!”
Jacob paused, then replied even colder “Lillian, think carefully, I won’t acknowledge this child.” He hung up abruptly.
Listening to the dead tone on the line, Lillian instinctively clutched the railing, feeling a bit weak. She touched her barely showing belly, her eyes stinging with tears. Just a year ago, she’d succumbed to Jacob’s passionate pursuit and married him, thinking they’d have a peaceful life together. Little did she know he had a “soulmate” abroad who’d returned a month ago, making Lillian nothing but an obstacle to their happiness. Since then, Jacob had been determined for her to terminate the pregnancy and file for divorce.
Taking a deep breath, Lillian forced back her tears, trying to shake off the thoughts. After the ultrasound, she returned to the office and handed the scan to Daniel.
Daniel examined it and said, “The baby’s fine, but you need to improve your nutrition.” Lillian felt a wave of embarrassment.
Daniel didn’t comment further. Instead, he removed his white coat, grabbed his jacket, and said, “Just finishing my shift; I’ll give you a ride home.”
Lillian forced a smile. “Dr. Martin, you’re really dedicated to your patients.”
Without a word, Daniel headed out. Lillian followed him, looking at his upright figure, feeling a pang in her heart. In high school, she’d chased after Daniel for three years before he finally responded, making her his girlfriend. But just three days into their relationship, she’d received a video of him with another girl. Outraged, she’d confronted him as he was giving a speech to the entire school. Standing in the audience, watching Daniel proudly bear the “top student” title, her tears had dried by the time he finished.
Waiting by the exit, she slapped him in front of everyone. “You jerk, it’s over!” From that moment, they’d had no contact–until now, under such awkward circumstances.
Lost in memories, Lillian snapped back to reality, looking out the car window with a shiver. They were at the same spot where she and Daniel had their first date. Daniel got out,

Lillian’s face remained unchanged, she held up her phone. What a coincidence–my husband’s just around the corner, said he’ll pick me up soon”
