Shiloh sneered at Jessie, her tone biting. “If your eyes are so useless, donate them to someone who needs them, instead of constantly slandering people.”
Jessie, on the verge of tears, looked up at Adrian, clearly trying to evoke sympathy.
Adrian frowned and said, “Shiloh, don’t be so harsh.
“Jessie was just trying to help. Over the past two years, whenever you weren’t around, she’d come to spend time with the kids. As their mother, you should be thanking her.”
Shiloh thought to herself, Adrian, your words are filthier than I imagined.
She shot back, “Maybe you should donate yours too.”
Nora glanced between her mother and Adrian, then marched over and wrapped her little arms around his leg, playfully pounding his leg with her tiny fists. “Bad guy!”
Adrian effortlessly picked her up, his dark eyes locking on her tiny hands. The next moment, the little one began to cry.
Shiloh rushed to scoop Nora up, but Adrian was too quick, holding her in his arms instead.
His deep gaze met Shiloh’s as he said softly, “Shiloh, we need to talk.”
She was about to refuse, but his gaze shifted to the two boys.
Not wanting the three kids alone in the living room, Shiloh led Adrian to the balcony connected to the living room.
“Say what you need to,” she said flatly.
Adrian got straight to the point.
“Children need their mother. I can let you see them whenever you want, but you can’t be a bad influence on them.
“You misunderstand Jessie too much. The kids really like her, and your attitude is only going to make them feel awkward.”
Shiloh felt a lump in her throat, suffocating her. The five years of marriage with Adrian felt less meaningful than marrying a stranger.
“Adrian, you’re lecturing the wrong person. As long as she doesn’t bark at me, I don’t care about her,” Shiloh said.
Her open disdain for Jessie was obvious. Adrian’s voice grew cold. “Shiloh, when did you become this aggressive?”
Half a month later, their second conversation ended just as abruptly.
Marty, upon hearing he would be staying with Shiloh, flatly refused. “Dad, I don’t want to stay here!”
Shiloh didn’t stop him, letting him leave with Adrian. Before they walked out, Marty glanced back. When he saw she wasn’t looking, a wave of indescribable sadness washed over him.

At 8 in the evening, Adrian hadn’t come yet to pick up the kids. Shiloh had just finished bathing them and had settled them into the master bedroom.
Her bed was large, connected to a smaller crib for Nora.
Travis lay beside Nora as she read them a bedtime story.
Before she could finish, both children were already fast asleep.
Lying at the edge of the bed, Shiloh looked at them with soft eyes, wishing she could keep them by her side forever.
At 10, Adrian finally arrived, reeking of alcohol and carrying the heavy scent of rose perfume. It was Jessie’s favorite brand.
During their five years of secret marriage, Shiloh often smelled it on him.
Adrian’s thin lips parted slightly, “I’m here to pick up Travis.”
Shiloh stepped back in distaste. “Adrian, didn’t you promise not to drink in front of
the kids?”
He narrowed his eyes. “Shiloh, mind your own business. My life has nothing to do with you.”
She stepped aside to let him in.
When Adrian saw Travis lying next to Nora, he froze in his tracks.
“The pajamas are new. They’ve been washed and dried–perfectly clean,” Shiloh explained.
Just as she was about to wake Travis, Adrian stopped her with a soft, “Let him sleep. I’ll pick him up tomorrow morning.”
Adrian left as quickly as he came, his steps unsteady.
Shiloh found his behavior puzzling. She walked to the window and looked down, spotting a woman. standing near the passenger–side door of the car. Seeing Adrian, she hurried over to greet him.
Jessie’s outfit had changed.
She’d been wearing a pure white dress that morning, but now she was in a bright red one.
What kind of date requires a change of clothes?
Shiloh looked up at the dazzling night sky, the cool wind slowly clearing her thoughts.
One must look forward.
The stars here in Metta weren’t as beautiful as in Oklark Village.
The next morning, Nora woke up early, and when she saw Travis still beside her, she beamed, flashing her big front teeth.
Travis woke shortly after. Turning around, he immediately snuggled into a soft, warm embrace.
When he opened his eyes and saw Shiloh’s face, he froze for a moment, then realized he’d spent the night with his mom and Nora.

Shiloh, watching his sleepy expression, smiled and ruffled his hair. “If you’re not tired, get up and wash up.”
Travis nodded.
She picked up Nora and led Travis to the bathroom.
There were plenty of children’s toothbrushes at home. After squeezing some toothpaste onto one for Travis, she helped Nora brush her teeth and wash her face.
Nora cooperated perfectly, closing her eyes in time for the towel, and when she opened them again, she was once more the adorable, fragrant little angel everyone loved.
