She reached out her hand toward Marty, who happily took it. From a distance, Shiloh could even hear Marty’s excited voice.
“Dad, come on down! Jessie said she’s taking me to fly kites! You should come too, and we’ll see who can fly theirs higher!” Marty said.
Shiloh stood frozen.
Travis, getting out of the car behind Marty, looked somewhat glum.
Nora, held in Shiloh’s arms, immediately spotted Travis, her face lighting up. She waved her little hands and called out to him. “Travis!”
At first, Travis thought he must be imagining it.
But when Nora called out a few more times, he finally saw them, his eyes shining with joy.
He waved at them. “Mom, Nora.”
Adrian also saw Shiloh, and their eyes briefly met before they both coldly turned away.
Nora slipped out of Shiloh’s arms and ran toward Travis.
Just as Travis was about to run over to her, Jessie grabbed his arm.
She pretended to be upset, saying, “Travis, Jessie specially set aside time to be with you and Marty. You’re not going to leave her, are you?”
Marty also came over and pulled on him, saying, “Travis, we promised Jessie we’d fly kites together today.”
Jessie smiled and added, “Jessic bought a lot of kites, and they’re all characters you like! Don’t you want to play, Travis?”
Marty eagerly said, “Jessie, I want to play!”
For Marty, as long as there were toys he liked, it didn’t matter who he played with.
Travis looked conflicted. He actually wanted to fly kites with his mom and Nora.
He glanced at Adrian, remembering how he had scolded his mom in the yard earlier. His head drooped in sadness. He didn’t want his mom to cry again.
Travis murmured, “I understand.”
Nora, excited, ran over in a white round–neck top and pink suspenders, with a matching candy–colored bag slung across her shoulder. She looked particularly adorable.
She grabbed Travis’s hand and sweetly called his name.
Travis was thrilled to see her here, but when he noticed the way his dad was looking at his mom, he tightened his grip on Nora’s hand.
He said, “Dad, I’m going to take Nora to her mom.”
Travis quickly pulled Nora toward the other side.
