Chapter 5
I thought I had become numb, that I wouldn’t be hurt by them
anymore.
There was a hint of emotion in my parents‘ expressions.
I didn’t want to hear any more from them.
“Kyla wants the overseas assignment opportunity, right? I’ll give
it to her.”
Kyla’s eyes lit up with joy, and my parents quickly nodded in agreement.
“I don’t want anything anymore. She can have everything, you.”
Dad looked confused.
“Sophie, what do you mean?”
I took out a bank card and handed it to them.
even
“This card contains the money I’ve saved over the years, about a million dollars. I haven’t spent a single cent from you since college. This million dollars is to repay you for raising me for eighteen years. Is that enough?”
Seeing their confusion, I explained more clearly,

“The overseas opportunity and this million dollars. Let’s consider it a clean break. Is that okay?”
Mom’s expression turned frantic.

“Sophie, how can you say that? You’re my daughter! How could you say such heartless things…”
I couldn’t be bothered to argue with them anymore.
“Then I’ll just take back the overseas opportunity.”
My parents fell silent, exchanging a glance before hesitantly speaking up.
“Then it must go to Kyla.”
I almost couldn’t hold back my laughter.
These were the parents who claimed I was their own flesh and blood.
My real parents, once again, chose Kyla over me.
I spoke to my superior, asking if I could give Kyla the overseas assignment. She trusted me and agreed.
I also handed in my resignation. When she learned I was joining Doctors Without Borders, she sighed.
“Sophie, Doctors Without Borders is still too dangerous. Going

I shook my head. I had no more ties in this world, so I might as well throw myself into a more meaningful cause.
Eddie came to the hospital to find me for the first time.
He pulled me into a stairwell, his eyes full of frustration.
“Sophie, do you really not love me anymore?”
I pulled my hand away from his and found it a bit amusing.
“Eddie, I think I’ve made myself pretty clear. Since you like Kyla, I’ll let you have her.”
“Now that you’re my sister’s fiancé, stop trying to pull me back into this.”
He kept pressing me.
“I don’t believe you could let go of me so easily!”
The door to the hallway creaked open, and Kyla stood there, staring at us. The next second, she bolted out of the room.
Eddie released my arm and immediately chased after her.
Soon after, my parents called me, scolding me non–stop.
“Sophie, didn’t you say you’d give everything to Kyla? Why are you still hurting her? Do you know she almost got hit by a car?”
Chapter 5
They wouldn’t listen to my explanation, and I didn’t want to waste time trying to explain.

Back in senior year, I was falsely accused of stealing something. The teacher called my parents in, and they wouldn’t even listen to my side of the story. They even considered disowning me on the spot.
Since then, I knew that explaining was useless.
If they decided I was wrong, then everything I did would be
wrong.
It wasn’t long before Eddie must have said something to them, because Mom called me again to apologize.
“Sophie, we know that you and Eddie are over, and we were wrong to blame you.”
I merely hummed.
She continued,
“Kyla and Eddie are about to hold their wedding. Can you come back and help her with the arrangements?”
“No need, I won’t be involved in your family matters anymore.”
I booked my flight for the next day and hung up the phone.
