Chapter 5
He stormed toward us, and in an instant, Emily had thrown herself into his arms, tears flowing freely.
“Maxwell,” she sobbed, “did I do something wrong again? Did I upset Grace? She asked me to come today, and I thought she was going to apologize to me.”
Her voice broke with faux innocence. “But the moment I arrived, she called me a little goblin who stole other people’s boyfriends. I couldn’t let it slide, so I defended myself, and she hit me.”
Her eyes flickered with defiance as she continued her act. “Max, I know Grace has never liked me, but that doesn’t mean you can just hit me like this, right?”
I could feel the heat of her gaze, daring me
to react.
Maxwell‘ s face burned with anger as he comforted her, his hands gentle but firm.

“It’s okay, Emily. Don’t cry.”
His eyes turned to me, full of fury. “Grace, you owe Emily an apology. Now.”
I stood firm, refusing to back down. “What if I say no?”
Emily, sensing her victory, smirked and poured fuel on the fire.
“Maxwell,” she began, her voice sweet but laced with guilt, “I shouldn’t have insisted on you taking me skiing. And I shouldn’t have worn Grace‘ s ski jacket. It was a gift from you, after all, and I didn’t mean to upset her.”
She paused, her expression turning sorrowful. “I didn’t mean to make her angry. My body’s so weak, I couldn’t even smell the pollen… and that’s why I had an asthma attack and fainted.”
Emily’s delicate voice, soft as silk, mingled with the sweetness of her
presence, completely holding Maxwell in her grasp.

With a tender touch, Maxwell ran his fingers through her hair. “Emily, you’re absolutely right. It’s all Grace’s fault.”
He turned to me with a harsh edge in his tone. “The last time you caused Emily to have an asthma attack and go into shock, it was deliberate. If not for your interference, I would’ve had her arrested long ago.”
He shook his head, eyes hardening. “You gave her a chance to change, but she only refused to repent and retaliated against you.”
Emily raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a smug smile as she looked at me.
Maxwell’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts as he shouted, “Grace, are you going to apologize or not?”
I met his gaze coldly. “Maxwell, aren’t you curious about what your precious friend said to me?”
He cut me off, his tone dismissive. “I don’t care, and I don’t want to know.”

His gaze softened as he looked at Emily. “All I know is that Emily is kind–hearted. She would never hurt anyone.”
Maxwell turned back to me, his voice. growing cold. “No matter what she said to you, it doesn’t justify your actions. Hitting her–there’s no excuse for that.”
I stood my ground, unwavering. “I’m not wrong. I won’t apologize.”
His face hardened, his eyes narrowing. “Fine. You‘ ve made your choice, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
He stepped closer, his voice low and threatening. “Whether you apologize or not is your decision. But if you refuse, it’s my freedom to call the police. I’ll accuse you of assault, and I have witnesses and
evidence to back it up. You’ll be detained.”
He paused, studying my face for a reaction. “Today, for your sister‘ s sake, I’m
offering you one last chance. Kneel and apologize to Emily. Beg for her forgiveness,
