Chapter 10 To Go Together
Asa Sutton’s POV
Shat are you doing bort That was what I wanted to ask, but I swallowed my words. He wouldn’t want me to expose the w knew each other, not when we were m public. Moreover, he was indifferent toward me. I pretended not to know him entered the operating room. Once I got changed into surgical clothes and disinfected myself, I made my way to the serating theater. It wasn’t surpusing to see that my replacement was lan.
The moment I saw Stefan, I knew my replacement was lan. Ian and Stefan were old friends. Back when I was in college, I even attended some of lan’s lectures. He was a respectable and celebrated veteran in this line of work. Someone like him working in East Mercy was good news to everyone. Ian was the only one here who knew I was living with Stefan.
The professor was serious when he was at work. When the surgery was over, he said hi. “It’s been a while. You and Stefan getting along!”
Itrone for a moment. Whit. He’s talking about the both of us? Why? This is odd. “Um.. We’re getting along well, I guess.”
He rolled his shoulders as they were stiff from him standing in the same posture for hours. He said with a smile, “Stefan and I are having dinner later. Do you want to join us?”
I quickly declined. “It’s alright. I have something else to do. You guys go ahead. This was confusing. There was no way Stefan would have dinner with me among the company, and lan should have known that. They were good friends. Does he have no idea how bad our relationship it
My awkwardness did not seem to register in lan’s head. He continued, “Stefan has it hard. His dad died and his branch company abroad just got established. He really wanted to come back, but he couldn’t.”
How did this have anything to do with me? It was odd that he was bringing this up.
1 looked at him quizzically, but he smiled. “If I were him, I’d be worried too if I left you alone at home.”
He was grinning stupidly. Is he just a genius in medicine but an idiot in everything else? What a waste of good looks. Fe’s probably stupid. Stefan would tear me apart if he could. I thought lan knew that. Or maybe he did, and he was only twisting our relationship into a happier version.
Stefan came in, and lan laughed. “So, do you want to join us for dinner?”
Shocked, I tried to say no, but lan held me. “Why are you running? He won’t eat you.”
I felt my head hurt. I can’t believe he’s this dense
Surprisingly, Stefan said, “Let’s go.”
1 paused for a moment. For once in my whole life, Stefan actually agreed to have a meal with me when there was a company I stole a glance at him, but he was inscrutable. He was never predictable as long as I was around, and I could never see through him. Maybe he just said yes because his friend asked him.
We arrived at an eastern restaurant later. I took the seat beside lan, thinking that I might upset Stefan if I were to sit beside him Over the years. I developed a habit of observing people, especially Stefan. I realized he was looking angry right now, which confused me. What did I do wrong this time?
Lan did not seem to notice the change in the atmosphere and said, “So, you done with that business? I don’t understand. Why did you take Veronica to East Mercy anyway?”
