Chapter 12 An Unnecessary Move
Ariana Sutton’s POV
I froze Only 1, Figaro, and Yoans–she was my best friend–knew of this, so how did lan find out? I could feel Stefan’s eyes on me but I didn’t dare to meet his gaze. Instead, I put on a calm look and asked. “Gossipy, are you! Who told you
that?”
Lansmarked “forgot. It has been a while after all. Back when I was holding lectures in your college, I heard someone mention that. Then you told me you and Figaro were college buddies, so this popped into my mind.”
I still held up my façade of calmness. “I see. That’s in the past now. He’s a good man. He deserves better girls.” I suddenly fell the air around me turn cold. Stefan had a dark look on his face. If looks could kill, I would have been dead.
“Maybe he still thinks of you as his beloved. You know, just because a man and a woman had sex doesn’t mean they’re good enough for each other. Someone will always be beneath the other.” Stefan spoke, and my heart sank.
I knew both he and Figaro deserved better women. He didn’t have to rub it in. For some reason, I felt myself i looked down and had my emotions from them.
up, so I
The air froze for a moment. lan speared some meat and placed it on my plate. He stiffly changed the subject, This one’s nice. It’s the restaurant’s signature.
Coldly, Stefan said, “She can take those herself.”
“Hey, I’m just trying to help lan gulped. “Are you seriously getting jealous over that?”
Stefan shot him a look. “I am not jealous. Shut up and eat your food.”
I didn’t eat much. In the end, things seemed to have returned to normal, but it was just a mask hiding the storm brewing underneath. We then left the restaurant, and lan drove away. I said, “I’ll get a cab. You go ahead.”
Stefan got in his car and sped off without saying anything to me. A moment later, he was already out of sight.
I didn’t really feel alone. This had been the norm for many years. Even when it was convenient to do so, he wouldn’t give me a ride home. To quote him, he felt disgusted every time he saw me. Even though I had tried to close the gap between us for so many years, it was to little effect. Come to think of it, all the sex we had, we had when he was drunk. He was only acting on impulse. He would never have sex with me when he was sober.
I waited for ten minutes, but there were still no cabs, so I opted to walk all the way home. A gust of warm spring breeze brushed against my skin, but it failed to take my sadness away.
Suddenly, a car stopped by my side. The driver honked at me, so I turned to look.
Someone rolled the window down. It was Figaro. “Alone? I can give you a ride.”
Nervously, I said, ‘I–It’s alright. I want to stroll around.”
Aria was in the backseat, and she stuck her head out. “Oh, just take the offer. Figaro’s a nice guy. He’s just being courteous, so don’t get any ideas.”
“I won’t.” I smiled dryly.
Figaro chortled. “What
it are you talking about, Aria? That’s nonsense. Now let Miss Sutton in.”
Since he was offering, I got in the car. Most of the time, Aria was the only one talking. Both Figaro and I kept quiet.
When I was almost home, Figaro blurted, “Pardon me for asking, but you’re living in the Jablonsky Residence, aren’t you? And you just had dinner with Stefan. Are… Are you two close?”
