Chapter 25 All My Fault

I walked for a short distance and reached a gazebo, where I saw a figure standing I steadied myself a little before I hastened my foonceps and walked over James greeted me when he saw me. “Ariana.” I was repulsed by the way he called my name, so I responded in a rather curt voice You can call me Miss Sutton.”

James looked similar to the pictures I saw of him, although those had been taken when he was much younger. He seemed rather embarrassed upon hearing my words “Ah yes. Your mother’s surname. That’s nice. Coming to think of it, we once discussed your name in the past, and we wanted to call you Cherry Motley because of how much your mother liked cherry blossoms. I hadn’t expected there to be such a drastic change in your name.”

I felt nauseous whenever I heard James talk about the past. What makes this guy think that he’ll be forgiven after his few attempts at apologizing for the past! He’s the root of all my issues if he really feels apologetic, he would’ve found us a long time ago.

I shoved the letters that my mother had left for him into his arms. These are the letters my mother wrote for you. She didn’t send a single one of them to you. I think you should take a good look at them and reflect on how horrible you’ve been. You ruined my mother’s life!” I watched as James opened the envelopes and read the letters with help from the lighting in the gazebo.

There were a lot of letters, and he read through them for nearly an hour before he looked up. His cheeks were stained with tears at that point. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to see you guys. Your mother was pregnant with you when I left. After that, I got scammed while trying to start my business, and I was sentenced to three years of jail. I was too ashamed to meet you guys after I came out of prison–I wanted to find some success in my career before going back to you guys. But… I hadn’t expected your mother to leave when my business was just starting to grow.

He sounded like he was telling the truth, yet I still had an icy feeling in my chest. “Are you as innocent as you make yourself to be? Are you saying that my mother deserved to be disappointed all the way until the end of her life? What about me? I was still here after my mother passed, yet you’ve never once looked for me throughout the years. You’ve never done your duty as a father,” I hissed.

James sighed. “I barely had enough to keep myself fed back then, and my life was an utter mess. How could I take care of you when I was in that state? Furthermore, I knew you were doing well in the Jablonsky Family, so I didn’t want to disrupt any of that. However, I have always been paying attention to you. I saw some news about you online and that you left the Jablonsky Family. That was why I came here in search of you, he explained.

Did he say that he saw the news about me? I frowned. Did he see all the gossip? I didn’t ask him what he thought about the things he saw online and simply turned around to leave. I had completed my task and no longer wanted to see that man in the future. He hadn’t been present in my past, and I felt no need for him to be in my future. However, James ran after me and grabbed my wrist when he saw me leaving. “Ariana” Please don’t leave. Why don’t you let me make it up to you? I know I made a mistake. It’s all my fault…

“Let go of me!” I thrashed my limbs around furiously, but I couldn’t get away from him.

Lukas Sartre’s POV

I recognized her the moment I saw her. It was just as Stefan had predicted–Ariana had returned to the place she used to rent with her mother. Everything proceeded without flaw–I became her new landlord, and I signed the agreement with her. Once that was done. I texted Stefan to update him.

Okay. All he gave me was a cold reply. I knew Stefan well, so I knew that he wouldn’t admit his feelings even if he cared about Ariana. Stefan was typically harsh with his words. Since his beloved woman was under my care, I figured that it was my duty to take care of her. So, when Ariana insisted on walking out on her own at night, I followed her from behind as I was worried.

If my guess was right, she was going to meet James. My guess turned out to be right–Ariana and James met in a gazebo. I hid in a dark corner, and I watched them exchanging words in a relatively calm manner. I got bored, so I pulled a cigarette out for a smoke. After a while, they seemed to come to a disagreement, and Ariana turned to walk away with a sour look on her face When I saw James reaching out for her wrist, I narrowed my eyes. I threw my cigarette aside and was about to se forward to intervene, but James let go of her before I did anything.

“I suppose you don’t have much money after leaving the Jablonsky Family, right? Here’s a card. Take it. You can spend it on anything. Why don’t you leave with me? We could go to Huntington, and I could get you a house there. I could find you a job, too,” he offered.
