Chapter 27 Humans Are Evil
Ariana Sutton’s POV
The man only resurfaced about 20 minutes later. At this point, the baby was no longer breathing and his tiny figure was losing its warmth The young child was free of all suffering. When the man saw me, he charged toward me and snatched his baby over before he started crying. “My child was fine when I sent him to this hospital earlier. Why is he dead now? Return my child to me?” he wailed
I clasped my hands together as I felt cold sweat forming on my palms. It was just as I had expected–the man probably knew that child was dying, and he probably wanted to cam one final sum of money before the child died. I fumed at that thought. Your child had biliary atresia, and he was barely breathing when you brought him in. How could you say that he was fine? You knew that your child was going to die!” I growled.
The senior doctor fixed his spectacles before speaking. “We’re just a small–town hospital, and we don’t have money for you, You shouldn’t commit such sins, anyway. Furthermore, we didn’t administer any jabs or medication for your child, so you have no right to say that we caused your child’s death.”
The child’s father, who seemed like a pretty trustworthy and honest man, ignored the senior doctor before turning to glare at me. “My child died in your hands because you didn’t provide him with any medication! How am I to know what you did to child while I was gone the man continued protesting. The senior doctor was at a loss for words, and he gave me a troubled gaze.
I took one look at his face, and my heart turned icy immediately. I knew that look–I could tell that he had run out of ideas. I was the one who took the patient, so I’d have to deal with the case on my own now that the patient’s parents were being insistent. Sigh. I can’t believe people are so mean. I’m disgusted by how manipulative some people can be. I’ve never encountered such cases in Grimsdale–I can’t believe Im encountering this in a small–town hospital!
Soon enough, the men made some phone calls and gathered a bunch of people who started causing a fuss outside the hospital. They were all attacking me. This went on until 10.00PM. Most of the doctors had gotten off work by then, but there were a few of them who remained for the night shift. No one had the guts to come near my office as they were all afraid of getting involved.
The man, who had seemed like a decent and honest person to me earlier, turned out to be a gangster. A bunch of his people blocked the front door and forced me to pay for all their meals and drinks. I was just a woman–1 did not dare to stand up for myself even after they took my purse. The hospital highlighted that they had nothing to do with the child’s death, and they told me to handle it on my own. They highlighted that I would no longer have to return to work for the time being if I couldn’t handle this matter. Their message was pretty clear.
That was the issue with small towns. They didn’t have any fixed protocols for handling such matters, and people would try their best to stay out of trouble. My phone rang when it was nearly 11.00PM. I was about to pick up the call when the mant snatched my phone away. “If you want her, bring us money! She lost my son’s life!” the man barked into the phone. He ended the call right after that.
It wasn’t long before I lost all patience. I knew that I couldn’t go on like this. “Don’t you guys want money? I won’t be able to get any money for you if you keep me here. Why don’t you let me head home first? I don’t have my bank cards with me.”
The man shot me a glare before he spat on the ground. “Are you sure you have money? I’ll go to the bank with you. I don’t want any tricks. My men are all over this town, so you can’t escape even if you want to. It’d be a waste to risk your life to do such a thing.” he suggested.
All of a sudden, an icy voice came from the corridor outside. “Since when did you old guys have a say in anything?”
