Chapter 62 The Ambition of Men
Ariana’s POV:
Linstinctively glanced up, meeting the icy intensity in his eyes. It was clear he wasn’t joking around.
Though he was engrossed in conversation with Lukas, he somehow remained attuned to my presence and noticed my encounter with Figaro. A wave of unease washed over me, making me feel as if I had been caught red–handed
Before I could process my thoughts, Stefan suddenly tossed aside his wine glass and leaned in, capturing my lips in a fierce kiss
His kiss was overpowering, leaving me momentarily stunned as I instinctively tried to pull away.
Yet, with one hand firmly gripping the back of my head and the other encircling my waist, he effectively anchored me in place, forcing me to press against him.
Let me go. mm!”
The more I resisted, the more fervently he kissed me, as if he were draining the very air from my lungs.
No, this cannot be happening! What would prople think of me if they witnessed this?
I lost all sense of time, and it wasn’t until Stefan finally released me that I noticed the frosty demeanor in his eyes had transformed into a smug grin.
His abrupt change in demeanor baffled me, but I instinctively scanned the room, anxious that someone might have seen us.
When I spotted Figaro’s silhouette disappearing from view, my heart raced. Does he see Stefan kiss me? He wouldn’t turn back to look at that distance, would be?
However, Stefan offered no time for contemplation; he swiftly wrapped his arm around my shoulders and guided me back into the living room.
With reluctance, I trailed behind him, where he resumed a discussion about business with Lukas and several other men. The conversation was beyond my comprehension, and I found myself disinterested.
As the monotony set in, I observed that everyone around me was impeccably attired, while Stefan’s crisp white shirt stood out, the jacket still resting on my shoulders.
That jacket only served to amplify my sense of discomfort, making me acutely aware of how out of place I felt.
I was on the verge of returning the jacket to Stefan when he abruptly shifted his focus from Lukas, his friendly demeanor morphing into a serious glare. It was astonishing how swiftly his expression changed!
I decided to drop the matter entirely, lowering my gaze as if nothing were amiss. How many eyes does this man have? If he ever has the audacity to take me to another event, I’ll just wear a T–shirt and jeans. He definitely wants me to stay covered, so tely bother with a fancy dress?
Upon reflection, it seemed he thought my appearance was subpar and didn’t want ine to become a source of ridicule, which made the most sense,
Suddenly, chaos erupted in the crowd. Just as I lifted my gaze to see Paget lying in a pool of blood beside Cabot, Stefan yanked me into his embrace.
For a moment, I was frozen in shock, and it wasn’t until I heard the surrounding murmurs and cries that I grasped the gravity of the situation. A fresh bullet hole in the glass partition confirmed that a shot had just been fired, aimed at Cabot. Paget had
aken the hit, absorbing the bullet in his upper abdomen!
Shaking off any shock, I pushed Stefan aside and hurried over to assess Paget’s condition. In a setting like this, I was likely the only doctor present.
Paget was clutching his injury, unable to vocalize his pain, and the blood loss was severe.

Glancing at the wound’s location made me break into a cold sweat. This bullet had likely punctured his stomach.
1 administered immediate first aid and shouted, “Get him to the hospital! He needs urgent surgery!”

Cabot was evidently taken aback by the turn of events, momentarily paralyzed with shock. Morgana, overwhelmed, was equally stunned. It was only after I yelled that Cabot regained his composure. “Hurry! Someone take him to the hospital!”
I stayed close to Paget as we rushed to the hospital, closely monitoring his status, fearful he might slip into shock at any
moment
