Chapter 14
John’s face was taut, his eyes flashing with regret and helplessness.
If the Everett Family were as powerful as their two families, he wouldn’t have had to worry about such a warning.
Lydia knew the Everett Family had always been at a disadvantage among the three major families.
As Lydia watched the complicated expression on John’s face, she said, “I only said I’ve been busy lately, not that I won’t Just set a date and let me know. If I’m free, I’ll come.”
Scarlett finally smiled. “It’s a deal, Lydia. Thank you. I know you’re not really angry with me. Don’t forget to bring your husband.
go
Lydia hesitated for a moment before nodding. “I’ll try. He’s very busy with work. I’m not sure if he’ll have the time.”
Lily, however, shot Lydia a secretive, disdainful look, clearly unimpressed. She didn’t think a poor doctor could be that busy.
The dinnerended. Scarlett wanted to accompany Damon to see Lydia home, but Lydia refused.
John made an excuse, saying it had been a while since he’d seen Lydia and wanted to catch up with her, so he took the initiative to drive her home. And so, John’s driver drove them.
Lydia sat in the back with her parents, while John, looking frustrated, glanced at her. “Lydia, you haven’t been home for over ten days. How have you been? How’s everything going with Mr. Brooks?”
Although Lydia had rushed into marriage, John still hoped she could find happiness in this marriage.
Lydia nodded and smiled. “Yes. Don’t worry, Dad. In a few days, he won’t be so busy. I’ll come home with him to visit you and Mom”
At the mention of Henry, Lily was clearly upset. Her eyes darkened, and she coldly remarked. “Isn’t he still an intern?”
John, even with his usually calm demeanor, couldn’t hold back is anger. “Enough. Lily, you need to check your attitude. Lydia is your daughter, and Scarlett is from the Jones family. “I’ve been holding my tongue through dinner tonight. You should know this is not how a mother should treat her daughter!
Over the years, Lily had been spoiled by John.
Lily, embarr my feelings.”
said, “How could you yell at me? I feel upset for Lydia. But Lydia never listens to my advice. It really hurts
Lily continued, “You know why I’m usually very good to Scarlett, don’t you? Scarlett, having a mother with a mental illness is so tragic. “And the Everett Family has many projects related to the Jones family, so everything I do for Scarlett in public is just for show.”
After saying this, she lowered her head, wiping her eyes, feeling wronged.
John sighed, knowing that over the years, her tears were the one thing he couldn’t handle. He immediately reached over and -pulled Lily into an embrace. “Alright, I just said a few things, and now you’re crying?”
Lily waved her hand in protest. “Don’t touch me. You were so scary just now. What did I do wrong? Lydia is my own daughter. Do you think I’ll forget her! I love her, you know.”

John softened his tone and comforted her, “Alright, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have raised my voice at you. Stop crying. You know it hurts me to see you cry…
Lydia felt awkward as she watched her parents argue over her.
Lily had claimed that she only pretended to be good to Scarlett and she was afraid of getting too emotionally involved, but she really did care about Scarlett.
Even so, Lydia didn’t want her parents to fight, as it would disrupt the peace at home.
John’s tolerance and love for Lily over the years were evident.
Perhaps, deep down, Lily did care about Lydia, but the traumatic experience of a difficult birth had left a scar on her heart, which might explain her sometimes cold attitude toward Lydia.
Lydia finally returned to Eastwood Gardens. Standing downstairs, she noticed the lights on in the living room on the 16th floor. Her weary heart felt a brief warmth at the sight.
Now, the only thing that gave Lydia a sense of peace was Henry. Lydia returned home and heard the sound of typing coming from the study.
After changing her shoes, she remembered the engagement party Scarlett had invited her to.
She quickly poured herself a glass of water and brought it to the study, gently placing it in front of Henry.
Henry’s attention remained fixed on the computer screen. Five minutes later, Lydia entered the study again, this time- carrying a plate of fruit, which she placed beside him.
Henry raised an eyebrow slightly, noticing Lydia’s attentive behavior. A thought flickered across his mind.
An hour later, Lydia was still busy, pouring water, refilling the glass, delivering fruit trays, swatting mosquitoes, and so on.
It was obvious there were no mosquitoes in the study. She simply wanted to be around Henry, hoping he would initiate a
conversation.
Sure enough, after Lydia tirelessly buzzed around him for a long while, Henry spoke. “Make dinner.
You haven’t had dinner yet? Lydia asked. “Wait a minute. I’ll cook for you.”
There were ingredients in the fridge, so Lydia quickly cooked a plate of pasta
When she handed the delicious pasta to Henry, he shot her a look of disdain.
Lydia blinked innocently, wondering if she had done something wrong. She quickly explained. There were limited ingredients in the fridge.”
Henry was genuinely hungry. After taking the first bite, a flicker of emotion passed through his deep eyes, and his furrowed brows slowly relaxed.
When he finished eating, Lydia blinked and asked, “Did you like it?”
Henry answered flatly, “It’s terrible.”

‘He called it terrible, yet he ate it all? Even the sauce?‘ Lydia thought to herself.
After finishing his meal, Henry got up to take a shower.
Lydia had already stationed herself in front of the bathroom door. ‘Henry, want to chat?”
Henry smirked slightly. “Gut to the chase.”
Lydia siniled back. “I have something to ask. Scarlett’s getting engaged, so we have to go to the engagement party. Do you think you can make some time for it…”
The sound of the bathroom door slamming shut was Henry’s concise response. Lydia felt utterly heartbroken.
‘He completely ignored my attentiveness and forgot that delicious plate of pasta. Lydia thought, a sting of hurt in her chest.
As she raised her fist to hit the frosted glass of the bathroom door, it suddenly opened. She could only awkwardly glance at the corner of the wall, her gaze drifting off.
Henry gave her a faint look before walking to the balcony to grab a clean towel, then closed the bathroom door behind him.
Lydia pouted, silently complaining about Henry’s coldness.
Scarlet and Damon were officially engaged. Coincidentally, John was away on a business trip that day, and Lily had made sure to call Lydia three times before the engagement ceremony to remind her not to forget.
Lydia applied light makeup and chose a simple white evening dress for the occasion. She was ready to attend the
engagement ceremony.
When Lydia got into the car, she found Lily waiting for her inside.
Ironically, this was the first time her mother had come to Eastwood Gardens, and it was also the first time Lily had waited
for her.
Lily glanced at the seat behind Lydia and saw that she had come alone, which immediately relieved her. She was secretly glad Henry hadn’t shown up.
Lydia purposely ignored Lily’s complicated look and, upon arriving at the hotel, took her mother’s hand and walked inside.
Scarlett and Damon stood together to greet the guests. When Scarlett saw Lydia, she immediately smiled and greeted her. “Hello, Lydia, Mrs. Everett, you’ve made it.
Lily smiled brightly and handed Scarlett the gift she had prepared. ‘Congratulations, I’m so happy for you both.”
