Chapter 7 A Woman’s Voice
Robert was already gone when Lily woke up the next day. She scratched her head in confusion. Her memory was rather fuzzy, but she could still remember the action in bed with her ex-husband the night before. Wow, am I really a pervert? We just got divorced. Did we f*ck right after that? I thought this only happens in novels!
She then recalled how she had been Googling what a divorcee could do to relieve the pain of their loss. Even though she had scoffed at the suggestion of having a one-night stand, she did it anyway. Lily flung the blanket open to look at her lower area. She could vaguely remember how intense and rough the man had been. The fact that it was inappropriate for them to sleep together only made everything feel more exciting.
She dragged herself to take a bath. When she was done, her phone rang, and she quickly rushed to take the call. It was Samson—he told her he had booked her a ticket to Avalon. The location didn’t matter to her. “Sure. When’s the flight scheduled?”
“Tomorrow morning. I booked this flight since you said you wanted to travel as soon as possible. Does it work?” Samson asked.
Lily nodded. “Sure. Sounds like a good time for me. Send me the exact details, and I’ll travel to the airport tomorrow.” Samson hung up without offering to send her to the airport—he simply texted her the flight details. Lily sat on the bed and read through the text while she dried her hair. After reading through it, she put her towel down and sighed. Lily knew this would be a long trip for her, and when she came back, she would have probably gotten over Robert.
After dressing up a bit, she went to have her meal and bought a bouquet of flowers before going to George’s grave. It was… grand, to say the least, for his family had spent a lot on it. She came up to the tombstone and put the flowers before it. “Hey, Grandpa. Hope everything is well for you up there. There’s something I need to tell you. Robert and I… Well, we got a divorce.”
“I don’t blame him, though. He couldn’t fall for me, no matter how hard he tried. I know it’s torture living your life with someone you don’t love, so this is for the best. He gave me a lot of money, enough to live a good life,” she continued.
He looked fierce in the photo, but George was an approachable man, and she was his favorite in the whole family. Lily teared up as she spoke, but she didn’t allow herself to cry. He can’t rest in peace if he sees me crying, she told herself. She then told him she would embark on a long trip but that she would eventually return, even if it took decades. Lily even told him she would bring some souvenirs back for him. After talking for a bit, she left.
There wasn’t much to pack even if she wanted to. Lily hadn’t stayed there for too long, so there weren’t many things that she owned there. Besides, taking too much baggage with her on a trip wasn’t ideal. In the end, she only brought a small luggage, and it wasn’t even full.
Lily sat on the bed as she contemplated whether to give Robert a call. Eventually, she decided to call him. He should be resting at this hour, she thought. The man on the other end of the line picked up almost immediately. “Yes? Do you need anything?” He sounded formal.
Lily was about to talk about last night, but his formal tone killed her mood. After a few moments, she finally responded. “Nothing much. I just want to tell you I’m leaving tomorrow, and I might be off for a long time. So… This is goodbye.”
“I know,” Robert replied coolly.
Lily pouted. She felt insulted by his indifference. She was about to retort when a woman’s voice sounded in the background. “Robert?”
Shocked, Lily quickly hung up the call. However, just a second later, she held her phone up with a look of defeat on her face. It’s just a woman, so why did I get so nervous? Why did I hang up? She thumped the bed in frustration.
