Chapter 2 Cheap Necklace
Jennifer gripped the necklace tightly in her hand. The weight of its memories was suffocating.
She remembered the time she was kidnapped as a child. The nanny who tried to save her had died.
Afterward, Asher had brought Sarah into the family, and since then, Jennifer’s nightmare began:
Every time Sarah got hurt, the blame was placed on her.
Sarah had been jealous of Jennifer’s success in getting into graduate school, so the family made her give up her spot.
And when Sarah needed a kidney, it was Jennifer who was pushed onto the operating table.
The pain from those memories twisted in Jennifer’s chest, making it hard to breathe.
At first, she’d treated Sarah like family. But little by little, Sarah had taken her place.
Jennifer had always been obedient, done everything for her brothers, and even sacrificed herself, but in the end, she was discarded.

Asher came to Jennifer, his tone soft yet firm. “Jennifer, you made a mistake, but at least Sarah isn’t holding it against you. She’s kind–hearted. Be grateful for that. I know this necklace is important to you, but why not give it to Sarah now? I’ll make it up to you later with something else, alright?”
Jennifer’s lips curled into a cold smile. “No.”
The necklace was a special gift from Angelina, not something she could just give away. And no matter what, her brothers had no right to decide what she did with it.
Daniel, unable to hide his anger, stepped forward, jabbing a finger at her. “Jennifer, what’s wrong with you? You nearly killed Sarah, and now you won’t even apologize? Her mother saved your life, and this is how you repay her?”
Asher was deeply disappointed.
He couldn’t understand how his once obedient sister had changed so much.
Jennifer stood straight, her voice calm but cutting. “Daniel, you’re right.”
Without saying another word, she snapped the crystal necklace off her neck. “This is the most valuable thing I’ve ever had. It’s been with me for so long. I hope this shows enough sincerity.”

Daniel’s expression changed instantly when he saw the

necklace. He couldn’t believe it. “What’s this supposed to mean, Jennifer?”
This necklace had always been her most treasured possession. It wasn’t worth much, but it held deep personal meaning. She even wore it to the banquet today, and now she was just handing it
over.
People around them started murmuring, “That thing looks like it came from a street vendor. How could she think this is enough?”
“Yeah, it’s a cheap trinket. How’s this supposed to replace a priceless gem? There’s no sincerity at all.”
Daniel’s face darkened. “You don’t get it. It’s not about the price, it’s about the meaning. Some things can’t be bought.”
The crowd fell silent, not wanting to upset him further.
Sarah feigned shock. “Jennifer, this was the most meaningful gift Daniel gave you. How could you just give it away like that? Are you sure you’re okay with that?”
Inside, she was disappointed. She didn’t care about this cheap necklace, but she couldn’t let that show.

Jennifer smiled coolly, “Of course, I’m okay with it. Didn’t Daniel say I should show sincerity in my apology? Isn’t this enough? Unless… you’re not okay with it?”

Daniel was nearly seething. “You can’t apologize with re–gifts!”
Jennifer raised an eyebrow. “But didn’t you want me to give out the necklace Madam Clark gifted to me? I thought you wouldn’t
mind.”
Daniel was left speechless, his gaze turning to Asher. “Asher!”
Asher let out a deep sigh. “Honestly, I don’t think Jennifer did. anything wrong.”
He knew how much that crystal necklace meant to her, and it was obvious she was sincere in her apology.
Daniel’s anger flared even higher.
His gift was cheap, but it meant something to him, unlike Angelina’s extravagant necklace. Family bond wasn’t something that could be measured by price.
Jennifer took a step forward, addressing Sarah directly. “I know this necklace might not be worth much, but it’s meaningful to me. Don’t tell me you’re going to turn up your nose just because. it’s not some expensive piece?”
