Chapter 39 She Was on Her Own
The car pulled up in front of Clark Manor.

Standing majestically on the hillside, Clark Manor had been around for centuries. It loomed over the landscape like a silent sentinel, watching over generations of the Clark family with a wisdom and authority that demanded respect.
Jennifer had heard that the manor employed over a thousand
servants.
Every heir of the Clark family had lived there, but due to Timothy’s leg injury, the matter of inheritance had become uncertain.
Timothy’s uncle, along with his cousin, also resided in the
manor.
Jennifer gazed at the imposing manor, feeling a strange mix of awe and intimidation. It wasn’t a place to be taken lightly.
A sudden wave of nervousness hit her. This was the first time she’d accompanied Timothy through the main entrance.
In the past, she had always entered through a smaller side door. The car came to a stop, and Timothy got off in his wheelchair. Jennifer, leaning on her cane, walked beside him. Memories

Timothy’s uncle, Acacius Clark, and his family’s behavior from her previous life flooded her mind. She felt a knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach. “What if someone causes trouble for me at the banquet?” she asked nervously.
Jennifer remembered all too well how Acacius and his family were not to be trifled with. They made no secret of their desire to take over everything once Timothy was gone.
His cousin, Sandy Clark, had always been particularly sarcastic whenever they crossed paths.
Timothy’s reply was cold and detached. “If you’ve chosen to be engaged to me, you should already know how to handle the Clark family.”
Jennifer immediately bit her tongue, thinking, “He’s right. Why am I expecting him to shield me from everything?”
Eric, who had been standing nearby, chimed in reassuringly, “Ms. Hargreaves, don’t worry too much. As long as Madam Clark is present, no one will dare openly mistreat you. Just relax.”
Jennifer shot him a skeptical look. “So, you’re saying they won’t mistreat me in the open, but they might still do it behind the scenes?”
Her nerves only worsened.
Jennifer made up her mind then and there: during the banquet, she would keep her head down and try to be as invisible as

possible.

Together, she and Timothy made their way into the grand hall.
The sounds of chatter and laughter filled the air.
Jennifer looked up and spotted Acacius and his family sitting comfortably on the couches, laughing and talking as if they didn’t have a care in the world.
Millie Clark, Timothy’s mother, sat on the side, a look of awkwardness on her face.
The butler announced, “Mr. Clark and Mrs. Clark have arrived!”
The room fell into an eerie silence, as if Timothy’s presence was unexpected–or unwanted.
Jennifer had heard rumors that Timothy’s injury might have been connected to Acacius.
It wasn’t uncommon for power struggles within wealthy families to turn ugly.
Millie, looking pleasantly surprised, approached her son. “Timothy, what brings you home today?”
It was rare for him to attend family gatherings, after all.
But no one dared question him, not with Angelina backing him
- up.

Timothy’s expression remained calm as he replied, “It’s a family banquet. Of course, I’d come.”
Millie beamed with joy. “I’m glad you’re here. It’s been too long since I’ve seen you.”
Jennifer, standing beside Timothy, offered a polite smile to Millie, but Millie completely ignored her.
Jennifer wasn’t offended.
Jennifer knew Millie disapproved of her, thinking her to be of lower status and unworthy of Timothy. But Angelina’s will was law, and Millie had no choice but to accept the engagement.
Every time Jennifer had visited the Clark Manor in her previous life, Millie had treated her coldly.
As Timothy and Jennifer moved forward, Acacius greeted them with a polite yet somewhat insincere smile. “Timothy, it’s about time you decided to join us for a meal. It’s not every day we get the chance to see you, after all. You’re a hard man to pin down.”
Timothy remained cold and silent, offering no response to Acacius‘ earlier comment.
Not that it mattered to Acacius. He didn’t seem to mind the lack of reply, instead turning his attention to Jennifer with a warm, almost overly friendly smile. “You should really encourage Timothy to come home more often. We don’t want his grandmother to worry about him, do we?”

Mary Clark, Acacius‘ wife, gave Jennifer a once–over, her eyes dripping with sarcasm. “Ms. Hargreaves, I must say, it’s quite something that you managed to hurt your leg even though Timothy’s mobility is already limited. As his fiancée, how are we supposed to trust you to take care of him?”
The mention of Timothy’s legs instantly changed the atmosphere. Millie’s expression hardened.
Her son had always been her greatest source of pride, but now, the mere mention of his disability was like a dagger to her heart.
Before Jennifer could respond, Sandy chimed in, a smug look on her face. “Oh, Mom, did you know? Jennifer once told the media that it was perfect for them to be disabled as a couple.”
Millie’s eyes flashed with anger as she shot to her feet, glaring at Jennifer. “Did you really say that? How dare you?”
Jennifer was caught off guard by Millie’s outburst.
She instinctively looked to Timothy for help, but he remained expressionless, offering no assistance.
Of course, Jennifer realized quickly that she was on her own.
