Chapter 41 The Evening’s Still Young

Jennifer couldn’t believe Sandy had the audacity to lay hands on her.
Completely unprepared, she felt herself tipping over, her body hurtling toward the ground.
“Great! Just my luck!
If I’m going down, I’m taking her with me!” Jennifer thought, swinging her cane at Sandy with all her might.
But just as she braced for the impact, strong arms wrapped around her, yanking her back from the brink of disaster.
“Whoa!” Jennifer gasped, looking up into Timothy’s deep, concerned eyes.
She swallowed hard, suddenly realizing she was sitting on Timothy’s lap.
“I really thought I was going to eat dirt,” she admitted, her heart racing.
Timothy chuckled and said gently, “Well, we could always get you a wheelchair instead.”

“Let’s not go that far,” she replied, realizing that once her foot healed, she wouldn’t need the cane anymore.
Timothy glanced down with a playful smirk on his face. “In that case, you might want to let go of my shirt.”
It was only then that Jennifer noticed she was clutching his collar like a lifeline. Embarrassed, she released him, stammering, “Sorry! It was… was just instinct. Didn’t mean to.”
Jennifer even smoothed out the wrinkles she’d created, trying to
make amends.
As she finally attempted to stand, Jennifer noticed that everyone was staring at them with wide open eyes.
Angelina’s laughter rang out, bright and warm. “Seeing you two together like this makes me feel at ease!”
But before Jennifer could respond, Sandy was on the attack again. “You bitch! You hit me with that cane?”
Fuming, Sandy snapped the cane in half and charged at Jennifer, her hand raised in a threatening gesture. “I’ll show you what happens when you mess with me!”
Jennifer’s expression hardened as she caught Sandy’s wrist with a firm grip.
“Hold on a second! You bumped into me first, which caused my fall.”

Sandy retorted, “You tripped on your own! You can’t blame met for that. And you had the nerve to swing your cane at me!”
With a feigned innocence, Jennifer replied, “Honestly, I didn’t mean for it to fly out of my hand. Maybe that’s just karma coming back around!”
“You’re really pushing it!” Sandy seethed, her face flushed with
rage.
She turned to Mary, her voice dripping with indignation. “Mom, my back hurts so bad! That bitch nearly broke it!”
Angelina interjected sharply, “Sandy, watch your language!”
Millie chimed in coldly, “Mary, is this how you raise your daughter? With such a lack of manners and respect?”
Sandy’s eyes glistened with unshed tears.
Mary rushed to her daughter’s side, concern etched on her face as she examined Sandy’s back. “Oh no, it’s bruised!” she exclaimed.
Frowning at Jennifer, she asked, “Sandy’s just a kid. She was only joking around. Do you really have to be so heavy–handed?”
Jennifer remained calm, her voice steady. “It’s unfortunate, but if she hadn’t started this whole mess, none of this would’ve happened.
“It’s not like I’d deliberately hobble around just to frame her,

especially when I’m the one almost stuck in a wheelchair now.”
Mary swallowed her frustration, turning to Sandy. “Let’s get you checked out by the family doctor.”
Sandy protested, “Wait, so we’re just letting that bit… woman off the hook?”
As the pain in her back intensified, she winced and took a sharp breath.
“Just go see the doctor first,” Mary urged, her tone firm but compassionate.
Sandy, too pained to argue further, relented.
Once the mother and daughter duo left, Jennifer exhaled a sigh of relief.
She glanced at her broken cane, frustration bubbling up inside her.
Angelina, still amused, said, “Timothy, why don’t you just take Jennifer to the dining room? She can sit on your wheelchair. It’s all the same.”
Jennifer’s expression faltered. “No need, Madam Clark. Just give me a cane, and I’ll be fine.”
“A cane? In this estate? We don’t have such things lying around. It’ll have to wait until tomorrow.”

It was clear that Angelina had arranged it this way on purpose.
Jennifer caught on quickly, a sense of helplessness washing over her. She glanced at Timothy beside her and murmured in a low voice, “What do we do now?”
Timothy didn’t miss a beat. “Maybe you should lose some weight. Try sitting properly.”
He turned his wheelchair toward the dining room.
Jennifer immediately fell silent.
There she was, sitting on Timothy’s lap.
She mused, “Actually, his body is in pretty good shape. His leg muscles haven’t atrophied much. Even though he seems to have given up on ever walking again, he must be doing regular rehab.
That’s why his muscles are still so well–maintained.”
Jennifer hadn’t expected to be this close to the man of so many
rumors!
She could almost feel the steady, powerful beat of his heart against her.
By the time they were seated in the dining room, Jennifer’s palms were sweaty with nervousness.
She sat beside Timothy, observing his silent presence.

Angelina, with a knowing smile, looked directly at Jennifer. “Jennifer, you’re a good girl. Why don’t you and Timothy stay the night after dinner? The evening’s still young.”
