Chapter 51 Put On a Show
At Timothy’s question, Jennifer paused for a moment, then let out a self–deprecating laugh. “I learned all this from the Hargreaves family,” she admitted.
She used to think it was unnecessary to play games in front of her family, but after being outmaneuvered and losing everything, her perspective changed.
Especially the innocent act; Sarah was the true master of that.
Jennifer thought, “I’m just following her lead, and who knew it would be so effective? No wonder Sarah loves to play the damsel
in distress.”
Feeling a bit awkward under Timothy’s gaze, she quickly changed the subject. “How’s your head? The anesthetic must have worn off by now; it must hurt a lot.”
Timothy’s voice was curt as he replied, “I’m fine.”
“Why did you step in to block that for me earlier?” Jennifer asked, genuinely curious.
She hadn’t expected him to put himself in harm’s way for her.
Timothy’s expression shifted slightly, a hint of discomfort creeping in. “Don’t overthink it. I just wanted to put on a show for Grandma. She’s sharp; she wouldn’t be easily fooled.”

“Oh, I see. Well, you definitely took your role more seriously than I did,” Jennifer said, relieved.
She thought, “I knew it! Timothy wouldn’t just step in for no reason. It was all for his grandmother’s sake, just to make it more convincing.”
Feeling a bit embarrassed, she instinctively changed the topic again.
“So, have you ever done anything like that for other girls?”

Timothy’s demeanor shifted abruptly, his expression darkening. “That’s none of your business.”
Jennifer was taken aback by his sudden coldness.
The atmosphere in the car turned icy.
Jennifer bit her lip, thinking, “Just like the rumors said— Timothy really does have a short fuse; he can switch moods in an instant.”
The car fell into a heavy silence, with neither of them willing to speak.
Before long, they arrived at the hospital.
Jennifer headed to the orthopedic department, while Timothy needed a CT scan to check for any concussion or lingering effects from the incident.

As they parted ways, Jennifer turned to Eric and said, “You stay with Timothy for his check–up. I can manage on my own.”
Then Jennifer turned around and left, as she no longer needed at
cane.
After she walked away, Erie pushed Timothy’s wheelchair and couldn’t help but comment, “Mr. Clark, I actually think Ms. Hargreaves is pretty decent. Your uncle always acted so high. and mighty, bullying you guys. It’s nice to finally see them get a taste of their own medicine with her around.”
“Stop talking so much,” Timothy replied, but as he thought. about Jennifer’s performance yesterday and today, his expression softened a bit.
He said, “Make sure she sees the best orthopedic doctor.”
Eric nodded, a smile creeping onto his face. He thought, “I knew it! Mr. Clark is tough on the outside but has a soft spot for Ms. Hargreaves.”
Meanwhile, Jennifer stood in line at the orthopedic department, waiting for her turn.
“Jennifer? What are you doing here? Did you get hurt at the Clark Manor last night?” Sarah’s voice cut through the air, and Jennifer turned to see her.
Caught off guard, Sarah had not expected to run into Jennifer here.

The thought of Jennifer being recognized by the Clark family made her anxious; she hadn’t slept well the night before, worrying about the possibility of Jennifer becoming Mrs. Clark.
Jennifer’s lone was icy as she replied, “What’s it to you? With all your chatter, you should be seeing an ENT instead.”
“Jennifer, how can you talk like that? Sarah is just concerned about you. You’re treating her kindness like it’s nothing,” Daniel chimed in, having just arrived on the scene.
Daniel couldn’t help but scoff when he saw Jennifer, who was dressed head to toe in designer labels, exuding the vibes of a high–society debutante.
He said, dripping with sarcasm, “So, it makes sense now. You’re trying to latch onto the Clark family for the perks of a glamorous life. But let me remind you, the Hargreaves family isn’t doing too shabby either. We’ve taken good care of you all these years. Are you really just going to throw it all away for a little taste of luxury?”
Jennifer couldn’t suppress a laugh at Daniel’s remarks. She mused, “What does he mean by ‘throwing it all away for a little taste of luxury‘?
He seems completely oblivious to why I left the Hargreaves family in the first place.”
But she didn’t feel like getting into it with him; it was always the same tired argument.

No matter how much Jennifer explained, Daniel never seemed to understand.
“I suppose if that’s how you want to view it, there’s not much I can do about it,” Jennifer replied, her tone calm but laced with indifference.
Daniel retorted, crossing his arms defiantly, “Seriously, Jennifer? This is how you address me? Don’t think for a second that your so–called hit song gives you leverage over me. Impossible! If you don’t want to return to the Hargreaves family, fine by me. And guess what? I don’t need your songs. either.”
His words dripped with an arrogance designed to rattle her, and he clearly expected her to be shaken.
