Chapter 242 Why Should She?
Jennifer’s eyes were red–rimmed, and she felt a tightness in her chest, struggling to breathe through the hurt.
Asher knew how much she cared about her parents, yet he chose to say things that cut deep.
Memories flooded back of her past life, where she had sacrificed everything for the Hargreaves family, only to be cast out and left to die on the streets.
She had perished on Christmas Eve, while her brothers were busy celebrating with Sarah.
When she finally managed to call Asher, he had dismissed her, claiming she was faking illness and that she should give up on
treatment.
To this day, Jennifer despised snowy days, a bitter reminder of how she had frozen to death on that fateful night.
Now that she had been given a second chance, why should she continue to give selflessly as she had in her past life?
Her voice dripped with sarcasm as she retorted, “Asher, don’t forget who kept the Hargreaves family from going under!”
Asher retorted, “And it’s all because of you that we’re in this mess!”
Daniel quickly interjected, “Asher, that was a bit harsh. Jennifer was just a kid back then. She didn’t know anything. You should be blaming the kidnappers, not her.”
It wasn’t fair to put the blame on Jennifer.
Asher said, “Am I wrong? If Jennifer hadn’t insisted on going to that amusement park, she wouldn’t have fallen into the kidnappers‘ trap.”
“Those kidnappers had it planned out long before. They were going to target someone from the Hargreaves family, whether it was that day or another. If they couldn’t get Jennifer, they would have gone after someone else. You can’t pin this on her!”
Asher’s words stung, but it was true that the kidnapping had devastated the Hargreaves family and led to their parents‘ tragic deaths, so he had taken on the responsibility at a young age and had suffered greatly.
It was clear he was still haunted by the past.
But this wasn’t Jennifer’s fault; they had all agreed not to bring it up to spare her feelings.
So Daniel didn’t understand why Asher suddenly dredged it up.
He tugged at his tie, looking directly at Jennifer. “I’ve let it slide all these years because you were just a child, but now you’re grown up and still being reckless, insisting on breaking off your engagement with Timothy. Meanwhile, Sarah is willing to step

in and carry on the alliance with Timothy. She’s doing a better job than you ever did.”
“If you think Sarah is doing such a great job, then let her take
my place with Timothy. I’ll go to Clark Manor right now and tell Madam Clark to her face.”
Without waiting for a response, Jennifer turned on her heel and stormed out.
Daniel glanced at Asher, concern etched on his face. “Asher, you know how hard it was for Jennifer to reconcile with Timothy. If she really goes to Madam Clark about breaking off the engagement, you’re going to have to deal with the fallout.”
Asher’s face turned pale.
He hadn’t expected Jennifer to react so strongly and run off like that.
He couldn’t let her confront Angelina, so he rushed after her.
Just as Jennifer stepped outside, Asher’s voice rang out behind her. “Stop right there!”
She turned to face him, her expression cold.
“Jennifer, your temper is getting out of control. You can’t just threaten to break off the engagement whenever you’re upset. Is it really worth it to use this against the Hargreaves family? Aren’t you still one of us?”

“Asher, have you forgotten that I signed a severance agreement with the Hargreaves family? Legally, I have no ties to you anymore.”
Asher scoffed, saying, “How long do you plan to keep this up? Even if you signed that agreement, you’re still part of the Hargreaves family. Blood doesn’t just disappear.”
A smirk appeared on Jennifer’s face. She was clearly unimpressed by his words.
Asher’s tone softened significantly. “Look, I was just venting earlier. Sarah’s mother saved your life. Kicking her out of the family would send the wrong message about the Hargreaves family.”
“And what about her hacking into my phone and lying about it? How does that factor in?” Jennifer shot back.
Asher continued, “I’ll have her apologize to you. After all, we’re family, and Sarah just made a mistake. Do you really need to make such a big deal out of it?”
In the past, Asher would have been furious and punished Sarah for something like this.
But this time, Sarah had indeed made sacrifices for the Hargreaves family. He couidn’t just toss her out–especially since, if Jennifer decided to push for an annulment of her
engagement down the line, they might still need Sarah on their side.

Jennifer couldn’t help but feel the irony in his words.
“To you, Sarah’s actions are just little mishaps. Meanwhile, if I did anything, I’d be treated like I’d committed some unforgivable sin, right?”

“But wanting to break off your engagement does come off as a bit reckless,” Asher replied.
At that moment, Jennifer spotted Sarah walking toward them with Daniel.
Asher quickly addressed Sarah, “Sarah, come over here and apologize to Jennifer. You shouldn’t have messed with her phone. That was out of line.”
He turned back to Jennifer. “If Sarah says she’s sorry, let’s consider this done. If you keep digging, it’ll only make things worse for you.”
