Jennifer scanned the car after getting in but saw no sign of Millie.

“My mom went home,” Timothy said.
“Just like that? She didn’t say anything else?”
Jennifer couldn’t believe it would be that simple.
Timothy reached out and gently touched her face. “Does it still hurt?”
Jennifer froze, caught off guard by his concern for her face. Her breath hitched.
She pressed her lips together before answering, “It’s fine. It doesn’t hurt anymore.”
“I’m sorry. I never thought my mother would confront you in public like that.”
Timothy was shocked that his mother had slapped Jennifer in front of everyone. It was clearly meant to humiliate her.
