Chapter 340 Testing the Waters
Jennifer studied the man beside her, realizing she understood. him less and less with each passing day.
Still, one thing was crystal clear–he was protective of her.
“It’s not happening until next year anyway. What’s the harm in saying yes?” His tone was casual, like they discussing the weather rather than their future.

Jennifer couldn’t hold back. “You can’t just casually agree to marriage like that. What if Grandma takes it seriously? You know perfectly well we can’t give her the wedding she’s dreaming of.”
“She’s already taking it seriously.” Timothy locked eyes with her. “But don’t worry, I’ll make sure you have your freedom when e your freedom when the time comes. I won’t force you into marriage.”
His words sent Jennifer’s mind spinning back to his past life, where he’d sacrificed everything for his ex.
She pulled her hand away. “Right, because without me in the picture, you’ll have girls lining up to marry you anyway.”
Timothy’s brow furrowed–this wasn’t what he’d meant at all.
She could feel his stern gaze on her, but she just turned away, lying down with her back to him.

After a long moment, Timothy finally spoke, his voice soft but firm, “There won’t be anyone else.”
Jennifer pouted at his words.
Of course, there wouldn’t be–his heart was still occupied by his first love, his perfect angel. There’d never be room for anyone else.
After what felt like forever, Jennifer heard the door click shut.
When she finally turned her head, Timothy was gone.
Jennifer stared up at the ceiling, lost in thought. It’d be a lie to say she felt nothing about everything Timothy had done lately.
That was exactly the problem–she could feel herself falling for him, which was why she kept desperately trying to pull herself back.
Jennifer remembered how far Timothy had gone for his true love in her past life. No ordinary woman could ever replace someone like that.
Jennifer wanted no part of that drama, fighting over a man with his soulmate.
Her last life had been painful enough, losing everyone she loved only to be tossed aside in the end.
She was done chasing after people who’d never choose her first.

The thought sat heavy in her chest. Jennifer couldn’t bring herself to pursue Timothy, to compete with his destined love.
It was just too exhausting.

As Jennifer lay there alone in her hospital room, Asher showed up around dusk.
Something shifted in her eyes when she saw him.
He walked in carrying a bouquet and a box of fruit. “Remember how these were always your favorite?”
Jennifer glanced at the fruit. “You got it right this time. These actually are my favorites.”
Unlike before, when he’d brought her sweets that were really Sarah’s favorites, not hers.
Asher recalled the earlier misunderstanding as he set down his things. Looking her over, he asked, “How are you holding up? Injuries serious?”
“Could be worse. No broken bones, thankfully. Dropped to my knees pretty quick,” Jennifer replied casually, fully aware of why he’d come.
Asher glanced at her legs, though the loose hospital gown didn’t reveal much.
Still, if nothing was broken, it was probably just surface damage.

Finally exhaling, Asher said, “Thank god you’re okay.”

If Jennifer had been seriously hurt, this whole mess would’ve been even harder to handle.
Jennifer gave him a wry smile. “Well, you’ve seen what you came to sec. Time for you to go. I need my rest.”
Asher’s expression turned uneasy. “Jennifer, you know this isn’t over. Sarah’s neck is seriously messed up, and her face… well, it’s pretty much ruined.”
“And?” Jennifer’s eyes flashed with mockery. “You saw the security footage, didn’t you? Sarah came at me first. I was defending myself.”
“I know. I’m not saying this is your fault.”
Asher hadn’t slept all night. The whole research facility situation was giving him a massive headache.
He hesitated before continuing, “Look, everyone screwed up with the lab situation. Since Angelina called for a ceasefire, shouldn’t Timothy back off, too?”
Jennifer’s attention snapped to him. “What exactly has Timothy been doing?”
“Dylan’s pharmaceutical company is under public investigation right now–something about issues with their drugs. Plus, the destroyed research facility… Dylan’s empire is hanging by a

Asher met Jennifer’s eyes with a humbled look. “Look, I know I’ve got some nerve showing up like this… but I’m here to beg you. Ask Timothy to let Dylan off the hook, just this once.”
Otherwise, the Hargreaves family would be finished.
