Asher finally gave a bitter smile. “This whole thing started because of the Clark family, so we can’t blame Dylan entirely. Now Millie’s perfectly fine, yet she’s taking it out on Dylan’s company. Don’t you think that’s inappropriate?”
“If you think it’s inappropriate, Asher, you should be talking to Timothy, not me.”
“Jennifer, don’t play dumb. You know perfectly well you’re the only one who can stop this.”
Asher dropped the beating around the bush.
He looked at the thin, pale young woman in front of him. “You’ve grown up a lot, Jennifer. You’ve changed. You don’t listen to me anymore.”
“And if I did? Would I have ended up starving to death in that basement?”
Jennifer’s tone flashed with mockery, making Asher shift uncomfortably.

Hearing such blatant favoritism, Jennifer merely lifted her eyelids. “We’re all human. There’s no difference.”
If she could be locked in a basement as punishment, why couldn’t Dylan face the consequences, too?

“Jennifer, have you looked in the mirror lately? Seen how cold–hearted you’ve become? Could you face Mom and Dad if they were still alive?”
Jennifer hurled the flowers Asher had brought straight at him.
“Don’t you dare bring up Mom and Dad,” she said sternly. “If they were still alive, they would never have let that woman Sarah into the Hargreaves family to steal everything from me!”
Mom and Dad had loved her.

Asher was struck speechless.
After a long pause, he replied, “That was Daniel’s mistake.”

The only reason the Hargreaves family survived these past few years was because of my engagement to Timothy and the contracts it brought. But the moment there was a rumor about me cheating, you locked me in the basement and practically wanted me dead. Have you forgotten about that?”

Asher was struck speechless, too ashamed even to meet Jennifer’s gaze.
The hospital room’s atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Finally, Asher pointed at Jennifer accusingly. “If it weren’t for you, our parents wouldn’t have been kidnapped and died. The Hargreaves family wouldn’t be in this mess. Everything is your fault.”

Jennifer’s eyes were filled with mockery. “The kidnappers had been planning it for ages. If they hadn’t succeeded at the amusement park, they would have tried again. If the next time it had been because of you, would you have taken responsibility?”

Asher lashed out in anger. “The Hargreaves family ended up like this because of you. Now that everyone’s companies are finally doing well, are you trying to bankrupt us again?”
