Chapter 10
It was only just before the surgery was about to begin that Adele remembered Michelle. “Nurse! Nurse! Why hasn’t my daughter’s surgery been scheduled yet?”
The nurse, who had been suddenly called in, looked completely confused and asked, “What surgery?”
Adele said again, “Of course it’s the kidney transplant surgery! Where’s Michelle? Is she already in the operating room?”
The nurse, now visibly surprised, responded, “You didn’t know? Michelle rejected the donation an hour ago. Didn’t she tell you?”
The news hit like a thunderclap and Parker felt as though he had been struck by

lightning, “What? She rejected it? That’s
impossible!”
Adele, now frantic, cursed in fury, “It’s absolutely possible! That ungrateful woman! She’s just a coward! When it came to the most crucial moment, she backed out! After all I’ve done for her for ten years!”
Sobbing, Janet spoke up, her eyes red. She looked up at Parker with an innocent expression, “Parker, do you think Michelle is intentionally refusing to give me her kidney? After all, she’s always disliked me…‘

Parker’s brow furrowed deeply and his anger surged, “Enough! Michelle is not like that! If she agreed to something, she will do it!”
Just as he spoke, he rushed to call Michelle, only to be interrupted by a text from her that

had arrived half an hour earlier.
The text was simple, with only a few words: [Parker, let’s break up.]
His heart seemed to drop to his stomach as he read it, his mind reeling. Without thinking, he rushed out, desperately trying to find her.
But when he reached Michelle’s room, he found it completely empty. Even her suitcase was gone.
A sense of dread overwhelmed him. His
hands shaking, Parker repeatedly tried calling her, sending texts, all of which were met with silence.
“How could this happen? Michelle… this isn’t funny at all!” Parker stood in a daze, his mind replaying all the strange things he had
noticed over the past days, an unsettling

thought growing within him.
Adele followed him, her frustration boiling over as she took in the empty room. “That good–for–nothing! I knew she couldn’t be trusted!”
Janet, trying to appear innocent and pitiful, clung to Parker’s arm, “Parker, you promised you’d make sure my sister gave me her kidney. Without it, I’m going to die…”
“Get away!” Parker shouted, angrily shoving Janet aside. Towering over her, his voice dripped with anger. “You’re the one who made Michelle upset, causing her to threaten to break up with me! If you die, you deserve it!”
After his outburst, Parker rushed out, speeding his way home to their apartment. When he arrived, he was shocked to find that

much of the house had been emptied out.
Even Michelle’s room was bare, save for a letter and her phone.
The letter contained only a single sentence: [The answers you seek are in the phone. Don’t dwell on it.]
Parker’s hands trembled as he unlocked Michelle’s phone. The moment it opened, loud, intimate noises filled the room from a video, the sight of two familiar figures in it making him tremble uncontrollably.
The person in the video was none other than Janet, her actions with Parker evident and the shame and guilt Parker felt in that moment were overwhelming. He couldn’t even imagine how devastating it would have been for Michelle to see this.
