Chapter 1
The day before my dance audition, some
thugs dragged me into the woods.
They tortured me for a full day and night.
They found me with two broken legs and a
face covered in blood.
My dad, stuck in a meeting, missed my calls
for help, and now he’s crying, all guilty.
My brother’s on the phone with his medical
professor, begging for an emergency surgery.
I hear him whispering, his voice low and tight.
“Dad, did we go too far with this thing at

school? Even to clear the way for Brittany,
there were other ways to screw with her
audition.”
Dad’s in the back of the ambulance with me,
brushing hair out of my face.
“Star’s always making life hard for Brittany.
This was the only way to make her chill out
and stop blocking Brittany’s path.”
“Besides, I’m leaving Star the company.
That’s enough to make up for it…”
My teeth are chattering, I can’t stop them.
A cold shiver runs down my spine.
My perfect family, my doting dad and brother,
it’s all a lie.
“The patient’s critical. Med team’s ready to
- go. Should we prep for surgery now?”
My dad actually says, “Wait till tomorrow.”
