Mikey stood up from the couch when I came in.
I said.
“What are you doing here?”
The house was already awkward, but that made
things worse.
Mikey’s fingers were grabbing the side of his

He did that when he was nervous.

He looked up at the bookshelf before stuttering.
“I was hurt, and the doctor said I need your help to get better.”
I sat down in a chair, and told him.
“I know your dad made you come, but I won’t

“This is my Mom, Heather.”
When the teacher looked at me, he gave me a disgusted look.
“You’re just a nanny here. Don’t get too dressed
up, it’s embarrassing.”
Heather got up to the stage and gave the award to Mikey.
Their picture was still on Jason’s desk.
Mikey’s face was turning white.
I kept talking.
“You’ve always been ashamed of me and didn’t
want me as your mother.
<
So I’m going to tell you.
I, Sarah, am not your mother.
You, Mikey, are not my son.
You’re a Carter, and I’m not.
We’re not related anymore.”
