I said.
“No need. It doesn’t matter.”
“What?”
37
“Whatever you and Heather do doesn’t matter
to me. I don’t care.”
I was serious.
I had prepared the divorce papers before I saw
him at the hotel.
I was going to give them to him after the
anniversary.
Jason looked at me.
“Yes it does, I didn’t do anything!”
Jason was lying.
He grabbed my hand.
“Honey, I messed up. I already…”
Jason hesitated.
“Fired Heather.”
“I have never begged anyone, not even my
parents.
But I’m begging you, give me another chance.
Don’t get divorced, ok?”
<
Jason was pleading, but I was serious.
“I don’t love you anymore.
So, let’s end this.”
I went past Jason and went out of the room.
Mikey was there looking sad.
He was staring at the rabbit and starting to cry.
He said.
“Grandma Betty made that for me, I thought I
lost it.”
I said.
“It wasn’t an accident. You threw it away when
you were eight.”
<
When he was five, he cried when the cotton
came out of the rabbit and asked me to help it.
But when he was eight, he saw Heather who told him.
“Boys overseas don’t like baby toys.”
And he threw it away.
To find the rabbit, I had to go to all the trash
yards.
I cried as I tried to find it.
I slapped Mikey for doing that and made him
stand in the corner for ten minutes.
After that, he never called me Mom.
Mikey said as he cried.
“Mom, Grandma Betty gave that to me, can I
<
have it back? I can’t sleep, I need it…”
Mikey reached for the rabbit, but I pushed him
to the ground.
I looked at the child and said.
“Don’t touch my mom’s stuff.”
Heather gasped.
She told me.
“Are you crazy? Are you doing this because
Jason doesn’t want you anymore?”
Jason was there.
Heather was trying to stir things up.
I laughed.
