Mrs. Hawthorne had promised that we could
get a divorce, so why had she changed her mind?
I felt uneasy, pulled back the covers, and wanted to go ask her.

Unexpectedly, Jason suddenly turned over and pulled me back. He looked serious and scolded me, “Don’t you know you can’t catch a cold now? You’re a mom now, can’t you be more careful?”
The concern in his voice made me feel cold.
I tried to get out of his arms and distance myself from him. “You… I know. Go back to your room. I want to sleep.”
He saw my rejection, and laughed. “You’re a woman who just gave birth, and your body isn’t the same. It’s not like I can’t find any other

woman.”
In the early stages of pregnancy, the doctor
said that I needed to eat more nutrients.
994
To have a healthy baby, I forced myself to eat
all kinds of supplements every day, and my weight finally reached a normal level.
So that now I’m carrying this extra weight, and
my belly still has stretch marks.
I glanced at him, said nothing, and turned my
back to him, thinking about asking Mrs.
Hawthorne tomorrow.
I woke up in the middle of the night, and he was
gone.
I picked up my phone to check the time and
saw a message from Jason’s secretary three
minutes ago.
<
She sent a photo of Jason driving, and said,
“So what if you have a baby? A man who
doesn’t love you just doesn’t love you. I just
wanted to see him, so he left with me.”
“Sarah, you were the only one who took this
marriage seriously. You lost.”
Yes, I lost completely.
994
Jason would never know that when I first met
Mrs. Hawthorne, she mentioned him.
He would never know that he and I went to the
same high school.
I had secretly loved him for many years, watching him without disturbing him.
So when Mrs. Hawthorne asked me to be her
daughter–in–law after I graduated from college,
I was so happy that I didn’t sleep all night.
<
But it seemed like my happiness was built on
his pain.
So, I let him go, and let myself go.
I didn’t respond to her message, and kept
myself nourished.
Soon, the last day of my confinement arrived.
At dinner, Mrs. Hawthorne took out a divorce
agreement that Jason had signed, and
reluctantly said, “Tomorrow is the baby’s full
moon party. Can you stay for that?”
But I shook my head. “No, I’ve already bought a
ticket. It’s tomorrow morning.”
“Then you can see him…”
“Mom, this family is in your hands now.”
I smiled.

Mrs. Hawthorne realized my determination, and wiped away tears. “Okay, I’ll raise the baby well. Don’t worry.”
I took the divorce agreement, and Jason came downstairs.
Seeing this, he frowned and asked, “What’s that?”
I clutched the agreement and shook my head. “Nothing.”
He looked at me.
I didn’t react.
Luckily, he didn’t ask any further, and focused
on tomorrow’s party.
He said, “I have something to do tomorrow, so
I’ll be late. If you need anything, just ask Mom.”
<
Mrs. Hawthorne disagreed. “What could be
more important than your son’s full moon party?”
994
“It doesn’t matter, you can go ahead and do
what you need to.”
Whether he was there or not didn’t make a
difference for the child.
Since I gave birth to this child, he hadn’t seen him at all.
Mrs. Hawthorne was about to say something,
but I shook my head at her with a smile.
Time flew by, and it was the day of the full moon party.
But the atmosphere at home was not as lively
as expected.
Mrs. Hawthorne took the baby out, and the
009
maid suddenly mentioned, “Mrs. Hawthorne, shouldn’t we wait for Mrs. Hawthorne to go to the party?”
She paused and glanced upstairs, choking back tears.
But she didn’t know that I was tricking her.
I’d already gotten on a plane the night before
my confinement period ended.
When Jason finished his work and rushed to the
party, he couldn’t find me anywhere.
For some reason, he suddenly felt a repressed
sense of sadness.
He went to Mrs. Hawthorne and asked,
“Where’s Sarah? Where did she go?”
