- 5.
I didn’t say goodbye to Mark. I just left the
party.
He came home in the middle of the night,
drunk.
He wrapped his arms around me, and I
smelled perfume on him.
We’d been together for a long time, but now
it was over.
I turned around and saw the hickey on his
neck. I just felt sad.
I didn’t know what Amy did, but when I gave
Mark the divorce papers, he signed them
<
“He has no idea what he signed. You can do
whatever you want now.”
That was good. I didn’t want to have to deal
with Mark.
If he wouldn’t let me go, I wouldn’t know what
to do.
The last day, the new visa I got came to the
office.
The receptionist gave it to Mark.
He opened it and looked confused. He called
- me.
“Honey, did your visa expire? Why did you get
a new one?”
<
I panicked and changed the subject. “I just
felt like it. In case I needed it.”
If he thought about it, he would know
something was wrong.
But he didn’t. He was too busy with Amy.
“Tomorrow is your birthday. What do you
want?”
“Do you want to go out, or stay home?”
I hesitated. “Stay home. We haven’t had a
quiet dinner in a while.”
Thinking about all the years we worked
together, I felt nostalgic.
I thought we’d be together forever but now it
く
was over.
But the next day, Mark said he had to go to
the office early.
As he was leaving, I stopped him. “Will you be
back on time?”
“Yes!” He looked confused, guilty, and
scared.
“I’ll wait for you.”
He froze, but he didn’t understand what I
meant. He smiled and left.
He never came back.
His phone was off.
<
He never came back.
His phone was off.
I asked his secretary, who told me he was
working on some important deal.
But I knew he was in Amy’s bed.
Amy pretended to be sick, and he went
straight to her house.
One thing led to another, and they ended up
in bed…
I looked at the picture Amy sent me one last
time, deleted Mark from my phone, and left.

Chapter 2
Landed overseas, and the sun was blazing.
When Dad picked me up, he saw I was alone
and asked if Mark and I had a fight.
“We’re divorced.”
I waved a scan of the divorce papers on my
phone.
“I had the lawyer get the certificate. Just
couldn’t wait to see you.”
