Chapter 2
LO
“Mason, I’ve put up with you for way too
long.”
Mason just stood there, slack–jawed and
stunned.
I rubbed my stinging hand.
Then I nodded to his parents, standing in the doorway, looking confused.
“Mr. and Mrs. Mason, I gotta go. Catch you
later.”
<
I didn’t wait to see their reaction before
getting the heck out of there.
As soon as I was outside, I nearly face-
planted on the sidewalk.
That smack Mason gave me must have been
with his whole arm.
My cheek felt numb.
I should have taken the chance to land a few
more hits while I had the chance.
Mason was always like that.
He never took my side, he only ever blamed
<
- me.
Jessica loved playing the damsel in distress,
the sneaky little witch.
I’d suffered enough through that back in high
school.
One time Jessica was locked in the bathroom
and screamed bloody murder.
I broke her out.
Then she ran into Mason’s arms and implied
that I was the one who had trapped her.
I couldn’t even defend myself.
<
Because Mason wouldn’t believe me.
So, I just stopped trying to explain.
And naturally, I ended up with even more crap
to deal with.
“Hey, do you, uh, need me to take you to the
hospital?”
I squinted up.
A guy in black pants and a black hoodie,
wearing a black baseball cap and a black
mask, was standing next to me.
This getup? It was either a celebrity trying to
L
stay incognito or some total weirdo.
I was about to say no when I just straight
passed out.
The next time I woke up, I was staring at the
familiar white ceiling of a hospital.
Smelling that not–so–great disinfectant smell.
And there was the black–clad guy, slumped
over the edge of the bed, showing off a head
full of blonde curls.
I couldn’t help but reach out and stroke the
golden, fluffy mess.
<
It felt amazing!
The guy woke up almost as soon as I touched
him. He looked me in the eye and immediately
turned bright red, frantically pulling his mask
- up.
But even in that split second, I recognized the
famous face.
The C–list actor.
I was about to say something when my phone
suddenly rang.
Of course, it was freaking Mason again.
L
I bit back a groan and answered the call.
Mason’s voice was low and husky.
“Sarah, Jessica had a miscarriage. My baby is
gone!”
“That was supposed to be my first kid, how
could you be so cruel?”
He sounded all broken up on the other end.
“Mason, you could actually ask your parents
to end the engagement,” I said without any
emotion.
“It’s not exactly rocket science. Our marriage
<
is just a verbal agreement, just say the words,
it’s that easy. Why don’t you do it?”
“Is it because you’re trying to have your cake
and eat it too? And you still expect that cake
to jump into your mouth by itself?”
“Have I been such a good little puppy that
you can’t bring yourself to let me go?”
“And, Mason, you really are a moron.”
I hung up, my chest heaving.
The young guy next to me quietly told me not
to get so worked up.
<
“The doctor said that you have a cut on your
face. If you were the victim of assault, I can
get you a lawyer.”
I looked at him.
Dressed in black, wearing a mask, but still
showing off a pair of puppy–dog eyes.
I smiled a little and looked down.
“Actually, there is something you can help me
with.”
