Chapter 6
Asher stopped in his tracks when he heard me say thank you.
“Why have you been so polite to me these past few days?”
“Are you getting married to me soon? Are you feeling nervous? Pre–wedding jitters?”
I smiled and responded to him, “Maybe.”
He looked at me for a long time, then pulled out a dining chair and sat beside me.
He held my left hand, as if he had a thousand words to tell me.
“Annalise, I wanted to discuss something with you….”
The hesitation and panic in his eyes made me want to withdraw my hand.
I didn’t want to hear him say goodbye.
I didn’t want to hear him offering his life–saving grace in exchange for me being his bridesmaid.
“Let go, you hurt me!”
He lowered his head and saw my bare hands, without a diamond ring, only that hideous scar.
But he refused to let go.
“Annalise, if I said, I…”
He had a determined expression on his face, which made my heart race.
Fortunately, his phone rang. It was the alarm reminding him that it was time to go to City Hall.
He panicked and hung up the phone, speaking incoherently.
“Annalise, the diamond ring that you liked has been bought by someone else. I had it
custom–made, but it won’t be ready so soon.”
“Would you not blame me for not handling things well?”
I shook my head.
“It’s nothing.” Asher’s phone rang again, he glanced at it and got up to leave.
“There are still some matters to confirm for the wedding banquet, so I might not have time to accompany you these two days.”
After getting married, let’s take the most beautiful ID photos and apply for the marriage
certificate.”
He now lies more effortlessly.
He left without hesitation after saying that.
The day before the wedding, he came back with his passport and a card.
Looking at the card he handed me, I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Is this the gift for me?”
He was stunned for a moment, laughing so hard that his teeth were not visible.
“This was my sincerity to you, thank you for your appearance tomorrow.”
He remained silent about what happened, and I also understood not to ask.
He thought that by paying a breakup fee, he could make me go from being the bride to being a bridesmaid at the wedding.
The next day, I cut the card and wedding dress into pieces and headed straight to the airport after packing up properly.
When the flight attendant reminded me to turn off my phone, I sent him the message that I had already prepared.
“Gratitude for saving my life, both parties!”
The next second, his phone was flooded with calls.
