- 7.
I was waiting at the mall when they got there.
Mom grabbed my hand, all sweet. “Can we go
get your bag first, honey?”
“Sure.”
I smiled, holding Mom’s hand like I always did.
Brittany was on her own, she must have been
really angry about what happened.
She wasn’t smiling like she always did.
Then, Brittany shouted:
“Mom! They won’t let me in.”
Mom realized she was being stopped by
security.
“Brittany, why are you back there?”
Mom went and grabbed her, and she started
crying and hugged Mom.
“Why won’t they let me in? Does sis not want
me to come with you?”
I rolled my eyes.
Mom tried to make things right. “The security
guard doesn’t know you and they wanted you
to wait in line.”
Brittany kept crying. “Why doesn’t sis have to
wait in line?”
I laughed. “I’m a VIP here, I spend at least $3
million a year.”
I saw Brittany freeze, then give me a look that
said she hated me.
She whined, “We only spent two thousand
dollars a year.”
Mom hugged Brittany tightly.
“You’ve suffered so much, honey.”
“It’s okay, Mom, I’m just happy to be here
with you.”
I leaned against the wall, thinking: What a
fake.
But-
I interrupted her pity party. “You don’t have to
work so hard anymore. You’ll be given way
more every month.”
Brittany said, “For me, money isn’t the most
important thing, I love how we are as a
family!”
That hit Mom hard, she looked at Brittany
with love and relief.
I sighed.
