- 13.
I hated myself.
After crying for a while, I asked, “What about
Mark? He didn’t mess with fate. Why did he
die?”
“He was caught in the crossfire.
You’re cursed to be alone.
Anyone who loves you will die.”
“No,” I said. “I don’t believe it!”
I couldn’t accept it.
Mark died because he loved me?
“I’ve told you everything I can,” my
grandfather said. “Believe it or not, it’s up to
you.”

“If everyone I love is going to die, what’s the
point in living?” I cried.
“Your parents saved you so you could live,‘
he said.
“That’s the point.”
Then he died.
It was just like he said.
Everyone close to me would die.
I buried him in the hills.
Then I went back to his shack.
I pulled out my phone and sent a text.
Then I went to the elder’s house.
He was surprised to see me.
He invited me in and poured me some tea.
“Did you see your grandfather?” he asked.
“I did,” I said.
“Thank you for telling me the truth.”
“You’re welcome,” he said. “We’re neighbors.
We need to help each other.”
“Your grandfather saved my life.”
“You can come over here anytime. My
granddaughter is the same age as you. I’ll
treat you like my own.”
く
I got cold. “Is that why you killed my family?”
