- 7.
They came rushing at me.
“Are you Sarah Lee? We heard your mom told
you the sentence that kills people! Can you
tell us what it is?”
“We’ve been trying to get it out of her for
years!”
“She used it again! Imagine how powerful that
line must be!”
“I’ll give you anything! Just tell me what it is!”
They looked like they were possessed.
I ran inside, slamming the door and locking it.
I huddled in my room, trying to block out the
voices.
Memories flooded my head.
Dad’s smile.
The hopeful look on his face when he made
his birthday wish.
Mark holding me when I felt hopeless, telling
me he’d take care of me forever.
The way he looked at me when he proposed.
Г
Us falling asleep together, promising to grow
old together.
It was all so beautiful.
Then their faces flashed before my eyes, their
eyes wide with terror.
Their bodies lying on the ground.
The same pattern, different ways.
I got up and started tearing my room apart.
I didn’t know what I was looking for.
I just felt like I was missing something
important.
Г
Especially with the way Dad and Mark looked
at me right before they died.
It was like they were trying to tell me
something.
I searched all day and all night.
Finally, the house was quiet.
Everything was a mess.
I laid down, feeling like a boat lost at sea.
The wind pushed me one way, the waves
crashed me back.
I wanted to find a safe harbor, but all I saw
was water and fog.
The world was telling me I had nowhere to go
and no one to turn to.
I was lost.
I didn’t even know why I was still alive.
Suddenly, I heard someone opening the front
door.
I went to the living room.
Mom was standing there.
