Chapter 2
But the Callahans, still clinging to the idea
that Liam was their son, set him up with a job
managing one of their smaller companies
after he graduated.
They even assigned some capable underlings
to help him out. But he was just a screw–up.
He’d take off at the drop of a hat, whisking
Maisie away on these “spontaneous road
trips.”
He just assumed that no matter what
happened, his family would be there to bail
him out.
Mrs. Callahan glanced at Maisie and said,
“You two must really be in love.”

Caught off guard, Maisie nodded eagerly.
“Yes, ma’am!”
“If it’s true love, you can overcome anything!
A little challenge like this is nothing, right? Being together is all that matters.” Mrs. Callahan turned to Liam. “Besides, your
girlfriend isn’t the materialistic type. You
don’t need a house, a car, or a pile of cash to
keep her around.”
With a sweet smile, Mrs. Callahan walked
over to me. “Janice, honey, I saw these two
purses when I was out shopping and thought
they’d look perfect on you. See if you like
them.”
“Thanks, Mom!”
<
I took them without a second thought.
Maisie stood by the door, glaring daggers at
- me.
- 10.
It suddenly reminded me of gym class back in high school. Maisie was in my class.
I was about to pass her when she suddenly tripped and fell in front of me, scraping up
her knee pretty bad.
But she turned to Liam and said, “Janice
didn’t mean to trip me. It’s okay, Liam.”
Only a moron like Liam would fall for that
crap. He stepped in to defend her.
“Janice, I don’t want to have to tell you this,
<
but apologize to her and let’s just forget it
happened.”
I didn’t even bother to explain. I walked right
up to her.
She thought I was going to say sorry.
She was trying to hide her smug smile. “Oh,
it’s okay, really…”
But instead, I slapped her across the face as
hard as I could.
“Is that enough of an apology?”
The force of the hit stunned her, and for a
second, her eyes filled with venom. But with
Liam there, she couldn’t lash out. “Janice!
You’re… you’re so out of line!”
That slap broke Liam’s heart.
“Janice, you’re unbelievable! This is bullying!”
And just like that, Liam never spoke to me
again, or came over to my house.
Good riddance.
