The wedding was over, and the guests were
gone.

Jake held out his hand, the ring on his finger
sparkling. “Let’s go home, Mrs. Callahan.”
I took his hand.
Back in college, we were on opposing debate teams. I’d gone up against him a bunch of
times, and lost more than I won.
I used to hate him with a passion and dream
about arguing with him.
Now I was married to him. Life is weird.
My future in–laws smiled behind us.
“Mom, wait up,” Liam called out, running after
- us. “About Maisie and me…”
Mrs. Callahan acted like she’d forgotten he
“Oh, you two? If you want to be together, be
together. Nobody’s stopping you.” She
shrugged.
“Thank you, Mrs. Callahan,” Maisie said,
tearing up again.
Liam sighed in relief.
“Don’t call her Mrs. Callahan anymore,” Mrs.
Callahan said, the smile fading. “You’ll be my
daughter–in–law soon. You should start
calling me Mom, Maisie.”
Maisie opened her mouth to say something.
“Hold up. I don’t think so,” Mrs. Callahan said
sharply. “Liam’s not my son, so what you two
do is none of my business. And you’re not
calling me ‘Mom.“”

Then she grabbed my hand, smiling at me.
“My only daughter–in–law is Janice. Don’t go
getting any ideas.”
Maisie’s face went from green to purple.
Liam pulled Maisie behind him, glaring at
Jake and sizing him up with envy. “Now that
you’ve found your real son, you have to tell
me where my real parents are, right?”
Jake said, “They’ll be here to take you home.
soon.”
Liam and Maisie’s eyes lit up.
Jake was ridiculously handsome, the kind of
guy who looked like he was born in a
custom–tailored suit.

It was obvious his family had to be loaded.
Maisie tugged on Liam’s sleeve, trying to hide her excitement. “It’s okay, Liam. I’ll wait for your family as long as it takes. I’m sure they’ll
be here any minute now.”
What a joke.
She was already planning her future as a
newly minted member of some wealthy family.
