Chapter 2

I was driving like a bat out of hell, but we kept hitting traffic.
I saw Mark’s fingers twitching.
The drugs must have been wearing off.
I leaned forward.
“Hey, can you step on it?”
“There are people trying to take my husband’s
body to sell his organs.”
“I can’t let that happen.
I’ve got to make sure he gets cremated
whole, just like he wanted.”
The driver was all about helping me get to the
crematorium.
He hit the gas, blew through three red lights,
and got us there first.
While the driver wasn’t looking, I pulled a
bottle of sleeping pills out of my purse and
shoved a bunch in Mark’s mouth.
<
“I know you can hear me, Mark.
I know you think I’m a fool, but you’re not
going to use me.”
“You’re about to wake up, but don’t sweat it.
Just take these, and sleep easy.
They’re about to roll out the furnaces.”
I got Mark out of the cab, and some of the
crematorium guys helped me carry him inside.
But just then, Kevin, Mark’s assistant, came
running up with Nana Betty in tow.
“Carol, the office called.
There’s a problem, and we need you there,
ASAP.
Leave this to me.”
I laughed.
“Go take care of it, Kev.
I trust you to get everything done, since you
worked with him for so long.”
Kevin sighed.
“Mark left a will, giving you the company.
<
Now he’s gone, so it’s yours.
You need to be there. At least take the call.”
Kevin shoved a phone at me.
On the other end, it was Mark’s vice
president, yammering about some problem
with a shipment.
It was all BS, just to distract me.
When I got off the phone, Mark’s body was
gone.
Kevin came out holding an urn, looking all
sad.
“He’s gone, Carol. This is all that’s left.”
I almost lost it.
